NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Mike Devine recorded a career-high 51 saves as the Dartmouth men's hockey overcame a swarming Yale team, 3-2. With the win the Big Green captures two important points in an extremely tight league race and is just one point away from Cornell and Quinnipiac in fourth place.
The win gives Dartmouth a 14-10-3 overall record, 10-7-3 in the ECAC Hockey League. Yale falls to 10-14-3, 7-12-1 ECACHL.
Dartmouth jumped on the board first when Dan Shribman (Swampscott, Mass.) potted the first shorthanded goal of his career and the Big Green's fourth of the season. A blocked shot by the Bulldogs at the Dartmouth blue line allowed Shribman to pick up the puck at center ice and skate in alone on Yale netminder Alec Richards. Shribman wrapped the puck around the right post for the 1-0 lead.
Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) gave Dartmouth the two-goal lead a few minutes later, shooting over Richards' shoulder into the empty net. Jon Grecu (Calgary, Alta.) assisted.
Yale put the pressure on in the second period as the Bulldogs outshot the Green, 23-7. The Elis put their first score up at 13:41 when Chris Cahill took a Devine rebound and one-timed it over the goalie's shoulder.
The Bulldogs looked like they tied things up at 9:56 when action in front of the net resulted in a Yale player falling on Devine as the officials waived off the goal. The Elis however, did net the tying goal at 18:19 when Sean Backman was granted a penalty shot. Backman came in straight on Devine firing high as the Dartmouth netminder gave up the first penalty shot of his career.
Pritchard broke the tie at 14:38 in the final period. The sophomore used extra effort to find shoot the puck through traffic past Richards potting his second of the game and his seventh of the season.
Yale finished with 53 shots to Dartmouth's 30. It's the second time this season a team has more than 40 shots on net against the Big Green and the first time since 2003 that a team had more than 50 shots.
The Big Green will finish up the regular season at home next weekend as Dartmouth takes on Cornell Friday at 7:30 pm with fans encouraged to white-out Thompson Arena by wearing white. On Saturday Colgate travels to Hanover for a 7:00 pm start.
