HANOVER, N.H. - Dartmouth men's hockey team earned its first sweep of Cornell since the 2001-02 season along with a share of its first Ivy Title since Bob Gaudet was in net in 1980. Five different Big Players scored as Dartmouth went 3-9 on the power play enroute to a 5-1 victory. David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) had three points, all assists. With the win Dartmouth is now 15-10-3, 11-7-3 in the league while Cornell falls to 14-10-4, 10-7-4 ECACHL.
After a scoreless first period, T.J. Galiardi (Calgary, Alta.) gave Dartmouth a one-goal lead on a hard wrister to the upper right corner of the net at 6:16 in the second. Jones and Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) were credited with the assists.
Kevin Swallow (Stanwood, Mich.) put the Big Green up by two on the first power play goal of the game at 17:56. J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.) won the faceoff passing to Grant Lewis (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) on the blue line. Lewis shot down low to Wyman who blasted the puck toward the net from the top of the left circle as Swallow was there to tip it in.
Jones and Tanner Glass (Craven, Sask.) combined on a two-on-one for the three-goal lead very early into the final period. Jones took a shot that careemed off the crossbar right to Glass who buried it on a one-timer into the empty side of the net. Lovejoy recorded his second assist of the night on the goal.
Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) gave his team its largest lead at 8:26 in the third. A hard shot by Glass was saved by Cornell netminder Troy Davenport. Johnson followed up the shot, putting the puck into the open net for another power play strike.
Cornell finally got one back at 11:17 of a goal by Byron Bitz with assists to Kevin McLeod and Raymond Sawada. Dartmouth got the four-goal lead back on the final tally of the night by Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.). Jon Grecu (Calgary, Alta.) and Peter Boldt (Greenwich, Conn.) had the helpers.
Cornell outshot the Big Green 35-21 but the Dartmouth penalty killling unit was strong as the Big Red was 0-for-10 on the extra man advantage. Mike Devine in net for Dartmouth had 34 saves while Davenport recorded 16. The win gives Dartmouth at least a share of the Ivy Title with Yale. Cornell could also share part of the title if they defeat Harvard tomorrow night.
The Big Green is back in action with a 7:00 pm matchup tomorrow against Colgate. The game will mark senior night for five Big Green players who will be playing in their final regular season game in a Green uniform.
