Dartmouth Wins Third Carnival of the Season
Stowe, Vt. --The Dartmouth ski team narrowly edged host University of Vermont by three points on Saturday to win the University of Vermont Winter Carnival.
With top-five finishes in all four events contested, Dartmouth led the pack with 634 points. The University of Vermont placed second overall with 631 points and Middlebury College took third place with 596 points.
The Dartmouth men's cross country team returned to the Trapp Family Lodge Cross Country Center to win the 3x5-kilometer freestyle relay. Senior Zach Hall (Nikiski, Alaska), junior Ben True (North Yarmouth, Maine) and senior captain Mike Sinott (Sun Valley, Idaho) combined to win the event by more than a minute, with a time of 42:55.6. Dartmouth's second team, led by freshman Patrick O'Brien (Putney, Vt.), had an impressive outing, taking third place in 44:06.1, less than four seconds off Middlebury's second place finish.
In the women's 3x5-kilometer freestyle relay, the trio of sophomore Hannah Dreissigaker (Morrisville, Vt.), junior Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.), and senior Sara Studebaker (Boise, Idaho) finished third with a time of 53:24.3. The Dartmouth women finished behind first place Middlebury and second place UVM.
On the alpine side, the Big Green competed in Day Two of the giant slalom at Stowe Mountain Resort. Senior Evan Weiss (Kenmore, Wash.) won his second giant slalom of the season in 1:50.26. Also scoring points for Dartmouth was sophomore Rusty Heise (Higganum, Conn.) who finished in 1:53.78 to place 10th.
For the women's alpine team, senior captain Sasha Acher (Madison, Wis.) finished in third place with a time of 1:58.03. Junior Michelanne Shields (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and freshman Hayley Jones (Whitehouse, N.J.) placed 10th and 19th, respectively, to score points.
Dartmouth next sees action at its only home carnival of the season this coming weekend. From February 9-10, the Big Green will host the Dartmouth Winter Carnival at the Dartmouth Skiway and the Dartmouth Cross Country Ski Center in Hanover, N.H.
