TAMPA, Fla. - Central Florida posted 3-1 and 5-1 victories over the Dartmouth softball team on Wednesday at the UCF Softball Complex. The twin-bill sweep ended the Big Green's two-game win streak and gives Dartmouth a 4-9 record while UCF's undefeated streak against non-conference opponents stretched to six games while improving to 22-13.
In the first game UCF kept pressuring Big Green starter Stephanie Trudeau (Spokane, Wash.) and it finally paid off in the fourth. Following a leadoff walk the Golden Knights tacked on two singles. Although Trudeau picked up a strikeout, two-straight errors provided the Golden Knights with a 2-0 advantage.
Dartmouth struck back in the top of the sixth, plating an unearned run when Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) ripped a two-out, 1-2 pitch up the middle to score Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) from second. But the Black and Gold got the run right back in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homerun just inside the left-field foul pole.
Amber Kime locked up the victory by pitching a perfect seventh inning. She finished by giving up just three hits, no earned runs and no walks, all while striking out eight. Trudeau went the complete game with just one earned run while striking out three.
In Game Two the Golden Knights made the Big Green pay for a first-inning error with a double down the left field line, giving UCF a 1-0 lead. A ground out and a hit by pitch put runners at the corners, where an RBI single into center concluded the scoring in the first.
UCF starter Lexi Gresham gave up a one-out hit in the first before recording 11-straight outs entering the fifth frame. The Golden Knights offense gave her room to breathe in the fifth after a single to center and a stolen base allowed the Black and Gold to sacrifice the runner to third with the runner crossing on a double to left center field. Dartmouth starting pitcher Angela Megaw (Bomoseen, Vt.) got the second out on a grounder to third, but back-to-back RBI doubles with two down stretched the lead to 5-0.
Dartmouth attempted to rally in the sixth, getting the first two runners aboard on a walk and an infield single. But a fielder's choice, a ground out and a pop up on the infield kept the Big Green scoreless. The Green did manage to ruin the shutout in the seventh as Kelly Fry (Marietta, Ga.) started the inning off with a double to right center. Willa Johan (Montauk, N.Y.), in her first collegiate at-bat, gound out but advanced Fry to third. A single down the line by Molly Chafe (Kennewick, Wash.) scored Fry.
Megaw pitched the complete game, giving up three earned runs while striking out five and allowing no walks. Gresham gave up six Dartmouth hits while striking out five.
The Big Green continues its Florda swing with a doubleheader tomorrow against Stetson University.
