JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Dartmouth softball team dropped two games to Jacksonville University today as the Dolphins swept the doubleheader 5-3 and 7-5, at the JU Softball Complex. The loss drops the Big Green to 4-13 on the season while JU improved to 10-27.
In game one, the Big Green gained a 1-0 advantage in the first inning when Katie Chifcian (Fullerton, Calif.) scored on two-out infield single by Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.). Chifcian recorded a triple to right center field before scoring on the single.
The Dolphins struck back by scoring two runs on a passed ball and a throwing error to take a 2-1 lead in the second inning.
Kelly Fry (Marietta, Ga.) tied the game in the fourth inning with a one-out RBI single to plate Chifcian. Fry scored a batter later when JJ Wright (Colleyville, Texas) doubled to left field to give Dartmouth a 3-2 lead.
In the fifth inning the Dolpins put a runner on after reaching on a fielding error. After two consecutive outs JU scored on a double to tie the game for the Dolphins while a two-run single cleared the bases to give the home team a 5-3 advantage.
Shannon Jensen tossed a scoreless sixth and seventh inning to secure the win in the circle for the Dolphins. Dartmouth starter Stephanie Trudeau (Spokane, Wash.) (3-7) took the loss after allowing five unearned runs on five hits in five innings.
In first inning of the second game a one-out triple down the left field line followed by a single gave the Dolphins a 1-0 lead.
The Dolphins lead was short lived as Parker led off the second inning with a home run to left field to even the game. After three scoreless innings, JU took a 7-1 advantage with a six-run, five-hit fifth inning off Dartmouth starter Angela Megaw (Bomoseen, Vt.).
JU opened with the fifth inning off an infield single to shortstop. After a fly out, back-to-back singles loaded the bases before a walk gave JU a 2-1 lead. Jensen scored two runs an at-bat later with a pinch-hit double to left center. A two-run single by the next batter scored two more to extend the Dolphin's advantage to 6-1. Another single capped off the scoring for Jacksonville.
The Big Green didn't go down with out a fight as they scored two runs in the sixth inning from a pair of RBI singles to make it a 7-3 ballgame. Yee started things off with a single up the middle before stealing second. Then with two outs Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) singled up the middle to score Yee. Wright singled through the right side to score Chifcian but that was all the scoring Dartmouth would get in the frame.
In the seventh inning however, Chifcian had a two-out two-run home run to cut the Dartmouth deficit to two, but a groundout quashed the late rally and secured the 7-5 victory for JU.
Megaw (1-4) tossed six innings in the loss and surrendered seven runs on 13 hits. JU starter Katie Buell allowed one run on three hits and fanned two batters in 4.1 innings to earn a no-decision.
Dartmouth will take to the diamond again on Wednesday with a doubleheader at UMass. The two teams will square off at 2:00 pm.
