CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Dartmouth's
Ben True (No. Yarmouth, Maine) made school history on Sunday, running the mile in 3:59.99 at the USA Track and Field New England Championship at MIT.
True's school record time lowered the previous standard of 4:02.26 set by Sam Wilbur '94.
True has been struggling to get past a lingering sinus infection and just finished a course of antibiotics.
"Things definitely weren't going right," said True. "But when you get to the starting line, you've got to give your all. I'm glad to check this off the list. It's something I really wanted to do and I know I can run faster."
At the NCAA Track & Field Championship on June 9, True was eighth in the 1,500 meters, clocking 3:40.17 and earning All-America honors. He said he has been struggling to regain his health since the NCAA East regionals on May 25-26.
Coach
Barry Harwick reported that a "rabbit" led the 1/2 mile split in 1:58.9 before True took over the lead. An aggressive wind hampered the runners on the back stretch, but True came through the 3/4 mile mark in 2:59.9. With Matt Deboie of Georgetown pressing him down the straightaway, True held him off. Deboie ran a personal best of 4:00.27.
Next up for True is the AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championship in Indianapolis. He will run the trials of the 1,500 on Friday, June 22 at 6:25 pm, with the finals scheduled on Sunday, June 24 at 2:40 pm. He's eyeing a time of 3:39.
True was speaking from Washington, D.C. where he is visiting the White House as part of Dartmouth's NCAA Championship ski team. Last March, True earned All-America status as a Nordic skier for the Big Green. "I'm honored to be here," said True, who just completed his junior year at Dartmouth.
