Hanover, N.H..? Less than a minute after checking back into the game, sophomore Maggie Goldstein (Hillsborough, Calif.) scored the game-winning goal to give the Dartmouth women's soccer team a shutout win over Cal Poly, 1-0.
The win was the first of the season for the Big Green and also its home opener at the 2007 Nike/Hypertherm Classic under the lights at Dartmouth's new Burnham Field.
The Big Green moves to 1-2 on the season while the Mustangs drop to 0-3.
"We are ecstatic to get our first win here but also with the way we played," said Head Coach Angie Hind, who earned her 25th just three games into her third season at Dartmouth. "We had a tough weekend in Texas last week and with a young squad there have been a lot of people doubting us, but tonight we really came out strong. We did a lot of work this week and we played well and beat a good team in Cal Poly."
Both squads had their chances in the first half, though Dartmouth held a slight advantage in shots, 5-4. The Mustangs rallied from a slow start to put some late pressure on the Big Green, but junior goalkeeper Laurel Peak (Redding, Conn.) made three big saves in the last 11 minutes to keep them off the scoreboard.
Dartmouth sophomore Myra Sack (Wynnewood, Pa.) had two booming shots in the last three minutes of the half but both were saved by Cal Poly's Alli Tramel to keep the game at 0-0 going into the break.
The Big Green came out of the gates strong in the second half and after checking back into the game, at 52:44, Goldstein made a nice move in the box to beat two defenders and Tramel for the game-winning goal at 53:31.
Dartmouth kept the pressure on immediately following the goal and Goldstein remained aggressive, hitting the crossbar and post on two shots in the next nine minutes.
Cal Poly mounted a counterattack, but Peak and the Big Green defense, led by senior Annie Stanley (Winnetka, Ill.) buckled down to preserve the shutout.
Peak finished with eight saves in goal while Tramel had four. Dartmouth outshot Cal Poly 15-10 for the game.
Hind was complimentary of her entire squad's effort, especially the play of the freshmen class, with three making starts. Rookies Melisa Krnjaic (Washington, D.C.) and Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) each had three shots.
The Big Green returns to action on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. when it faces Minnesota for the tournament title. The Golden Gophers topped Providence, 3-0 on Friday.
