HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's hockey team erased two deficits and took a third period lead, but could not hold off Clarkson as the Big Green settled for a 3-3 tie with the Golden Knights.
Clarkson (14-4-3, 5-3-1 ECAC) went on top first with 14:28 left in the first period on a power play goal by Amanda Dittmer with the assist credited to Marie-Jo Gaudet. Dartmouth fired back four minutes later as sophomore Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) evened the score at 1-1 midway through the opening period. For Cunningham, it was her team-leading 17th goal of the season.
The Golden Knights, however, took the lead back at 2-1 with 8:40 remaining in the first on a unassisted goal by Gaudet. Dartmouth outshot Clarkson in the first period 8-3 and the Big Green came up empty on two power play chances.
The Big Green (11-4-2, 8-3-1 ECAC) once again came back to tie it up as senior captain Nicole Ruta (Pickering, Ont.) netted her third of the season with 8:30 remaining in the second period.
In the third period, junior Katie Gray (Calgary, Atla,) gave Dartmouth its first lead of the game at 3-2 with 9:20 left in third period on her second of the season, but the lead didn't last long. The Golden Knights knotted the game at 3-3 on another power play goal by Kimberly McKenney with seven minutes to go.
In overtime, both teams could only manage one shot on net as the Big Green settled for a 3-3 tie with the Golden Knights.
Junior goaltender Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) made 20 stops in net for Dartmouth, while Eve Grandmont-Berube pushed aside 16 shots.
Clarkson held a 23-19 shot advantage over Dartmouth, including outshooting the Big Green 11-4 in the final period. Dartmouth didn't help themselves with six penalties with four coming in the third period. The Golden Knights capitalized on two of their six power plays, while the Big Green only had three power play chances and Dartmouth came up scoreless on all three.
Dartmouth returns to action tomorrow afternoon as the Big Green head to seventh-ranked St. Lawrence for a showdown between two of the top teams in the country with face-off is set for 4 p.m.
