Blacksburg, Va.. - It took five extra minutes for ACC foe Virginia Tech (13-7) to take an 80-73 overtime victory against the Dartmouth women's basketball team (4-11) this afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.
At the end of regulation, Junior guard Koren Schram (Batesville, Ark.) gave Dartmouth a two point lead up 60-58 off a pair of free-throws with 28 seconds left. Tech's Andrea Barbour hit a big layup on the next possession to knot it at 60-60 and the Big Green could not get a shot off in its last trip down the court, forcing overtime.
The teams traded buckets in the early goings of overtime, and Dartmouth took a 64-62 lead after a Kristen Craft (Marshalltown, Iowa) lay-in. Virginia Tech rallied to go on an 8-0 run, however, taking a 70-64 lead with 56 seconds remaining. The Big Green would cut the lead to four, but never got closer than that. Tech hit 9 of 10 free-throws in the last minute of play to extend its lead and take the 80-73 win.
Schram led Dartmouth with 16 points along with five rebounds. She was joined in double-figures by Betsy Williams (Norwich, Vt.) with 13, Brittney Smith (Fort Worth, Texas) with 12 along with six rebounds and Craft with 11 points.
In the early goings of the game, Dartmouth's consecutive turnovers allowed Virginia Tech to take a 5-0 lead at 17:49, the Big Green got down the business and gave the Hokies fits on both ends of the court.
Dartmouth trailed 14-10 at 12;06 after a triple by Biggs, but utilized a timeout to regroup and go on a 7-0 run and take a 17-14 lead at 10:14 after a pair od made free-throws by Brittney Smith. Dartmouth increased its lead to 22-19 at 5:12, before Brentnall snapped a four-minute Hokie drought with a three-point play to tie it up.
Tech buckled down and held Dartmouth scoreless for nearly five minutes to take a 26-22 lead at 1:56. The Big Green answered with an 8-2 run including back-to-back triples by Schram and Williams to take a 30-28 lead into the locker room. Despite a woeful 17 turnovers, Dartmouth shot a sizzling 52 percent from the field while holding Virginia Tech to just 33 percent for the period.
The Big Green came out hard in the second half, inflating its lead to six points, up 42-36 at 15:25 after a Margaret Smith (Fort Worth, Texas) jumper. The Hokies kept pace with the Big Green offensively as the half moved on, but Dartmouth stood its ground, leading 50-44 at 11:53 after a Schram triple.
Virginia Tech's Eleanor Brentnall turned it up for her team in the post, tying the game at 56-56 at 2:55. Craft hit a jumper at 2:18 to regain the lead for Dartmouth before Andrea Barbour tied it at 58-58 with 57 seconds left, setting up the dramatic end to regulation.
Both teams shot 44.8 percent from the floor for the game, while the Big Green had 16 turnovers to the Hokies' 23. Brtitany Cook led all scorers with 19 points while Utahaya Drye had 17.
Dartmouth is back in action on Saturday Jan. 26 when it hosts Ivy rival Harvard at 5:00 p.m. at Leede Arena.
