HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team began the 2008-09 season with a 2-1 victory over Quebec Three-Rivers on Saturday afternoon during an exhibition contest at Thompson Arena. Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.) and Josh Gillam (Peterborough, Ont.) both potted goals in the first period as the Big Green took the early lead and never looked back.
With under two minutes gone in the game Peter Boldt (Greenwich, Conn.) generated some offense for Dartmouth with a shot on net that was rebounded out to Andrew Owsiak (Moose Jaw, Sask.). Owsiak faked a shot, passing instead to Reeds who was waiting just to the left of the cage as the sophomore put the puck behind the UQTR goalie who was out of position.
Gillam lit the lamp with just three minutes left in the period when Joe Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) set the play up with a hard hit alongside the leftside boards, getting the puck to Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) at the point just to the right of the net. Jones passed to teammate Connor Goggin (GlenEllyn, Ill.) who was camped in front of the net. Goggin backhanded the puck which glanced off Gillam's stick and into the net.
Quebec got one back midway through the second stanza when Jean Breton pulled Dan Goulding (Toronto, Ont.) out of the net as Mathieu Gravel put it behind the Big Green netminder.
Dartmouth played 17 underclassmen as Jody O'Neill (Nepean, Ont.) and James Mellow (Rehobeth, Mass.) both took stints in net.
The BIg Green opens the regular season at Harvard on Friday, Oct. 31. The contest will be the first ECAC Hockey League game of the season. Dartmouth hosts Vermont on Sunday, Nov. 1 in the BIg Green's home opener. Game time for both contests will be 7:00 pm.
