PRINCETON, N.J. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball team had the Princeton Tigers against the ropes as the Big Green was four points away from forcing a fifth set, but the Tigers were able to rally for the 3-1
victory Saturday afternoon in DIllon Gym.
Ahead two sets to one, Princeton trailed Dartmouth 21-14 in the third set when a service error by the Big Green sent the Tigers to the line. A ball-handling error by Dartmouth got things going for the home team as Princeton went on an eight-point rally. The Big Green was able to get back into the scoring column, however the Green could never put Princeton away at that point. A Dartmouth error ended a 25-21, 25-27, 25-15, 28-26 victory for the Tigers.
"It was a really great volleyball match," said head coach Ann Marie Larese. "We played with heart the whole time and we just tried to get some momentum going into the fourth set. I felt we did some good things against a team that is really good and I feel we're starting to get the production we need. I think we've shown we can hang with the top teams in our league, now we just need to learn to beat them."
In the first set Princeton pulled out early and never looked back as Dartmouth was no closer than four late in the contest. The second set was much closer as the two sides went back and forth as neither team was able to get much of a lead. The Tigers went up by two but the Big Green came marching back winning the next six out of seven points to even the match at one. The third set had Dartmouth taking the early lead, going up by as much as three before the Tigers tied the set at 12. Princeton then went up by five, winning easily to take the a 2-1 lead setting up the exciting fourth set.
Morgan Covington (Katy, Texas) led Dartmouth with 16 kills and five blocks while Kelsey Johnson (Carlsbad, Calif.) led her squad with a .455 hitting percentage as she added 10 kills. Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs. Kendall Houston (Austin, Texas) was the BIg Green's top setter with 40 as the freshman also added 10 digs.
The
loss moves Dartmouth to 6-12 overall and 2-6 in the Ivy League while the Tigers improve to 12-3, 6-1 Ivy. The Big Green heads home next weekend with matches against Brown and Yale.
