CAMBRIDGE, Mass. ? The Dartmouth women's volleyball team was downed by Harvard on Friday in three sets. The Crimson, using a balanced attack, extended its win streak to six as Harvard swept the Big Green in the season series.
“We just couldn't pass the ball like we wanted," said head coach Ann Marie Larse. "We were going up against a huge blocking lineup. We moved people around, trying to catch fire, get something going but we just didn't bring our "A" game. They scored too many off the serve and that's a killer because the game is short. We're very young and we're making mistakes of a young team, our consistency needs to be worked on.”
Dartmouth (4-8, 0-2 Ivy) battled for the first points of the set. After eight points, the score was tied at 4-4. Harvard took the first two-point lead but the Big Green wouldn't let the Crimson get ahead by much, scoring the next point. Harvard won four of the next six to take a 12-8 lead. Dartmouth earned the next side out to cut the lead to three, but six of the next seven tallies went the way of the Crimson as Harvard went ahead 18-10. After a Big Green timeout, Dartmouth scored back-to-back points to pull within 18-12. Two kills and a block put three more tallies on Harvard's side to make it 21-12. The Big Green cut the lead to eight, 23-15, before two kills gave the home team the first set by a score of 25-15.
Harvard came out big in the second frame and quickly ran out to an 11-3 lead, which included a 5-0 run. The Crimson dominated the net to turn an eight-point lead into a 17-5 advantage ? as Anne Carroll Ingersoll and Lily Durwood created a wall and posted four blocks together. Dartmouth managed to cut the lead to 10 at 21-11, but solid attacking down the stretch gave the Crimson a 2-0 lead in the contest.
The Big Green scored the first point of the third stanza and pushed the Crimson every step of the way. Harvard tied the score and took the lead 2-1 on a block but Dartmouth kept pace, earning side outs and not allowing Harvard to pull away. The largest lead of the set was three, until the Crimson served for match point. After the Big Green scored two straight to pull within one, the Crimson called a timeout. Harvard responded with the next point, a kill, to take a two-point lead. The Big Green answered with a Kendall Houston (Austin, Texas) strike, before another kill and a Dartmouth error set up match point. Durwood served an ace for the final point and the victory.
Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) led her squad with nine kills while chipping in six digs. Amber Bryant (Libertyville, Ill.) led the team in digs with 15. Natalia Wrobel (La Jolla, Calif.) and Houston shared setting duties as the two had 10 and 11, respectively.
The Big Green returns to action next weekend against Yale and Brown. Dartmouth starts its road swing off at Yale on Friday, Oct. 10 for a 7 p.m. contest. The Big Green and the Bears meet Saturday at 4 p.m.
