Burlington, Vt. ? The 34th meeting between New England rivals Vermont and Dartmouth was a 90-minute battle, but the Catamounts held on for a 2-1 win.
Dartmouth dropped to 5-3-1 overall with the loss while Vermont improved to 5-2-4. Vermont had been winless in its last six meetings with Dartmouth, playing to a tie on four occasions.
The teams went toe-to-toe in midfield for the majority of the contest and Vermont held a slight shot advantage, 13-11.
The Catamounts struck first and held on to their early, 1-0 lead for the rest of the half. Jordan Crasilneck sent a corner kick into the box and Ryan White headed it to the middle before Connor Tobin won a scramble in the goalmouth at 6:16. Vermont outshot Dartmouth, 5-4 in the first.
It took some time for the offense to get going in the second, but once again it was Vermont striking the first blow in the 57th minute. Vermont's Lee Stephane Kouadio fired a shot that Dartmouth goalkeeper Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.) stopped at point-blank range. The rebound got away from Milligan, however, and Patrick Alonis got to the ball first and tapped it in for the eventual game-winner.
The Big Green kept pressuring the Cats and finally broke through, but not until the 87th minute. Sophomore back Bryan Giudicelli (Emerald Hills, Calif.) sent a thru ball up to rookie Lucky Mkosana (Bulwayo, Zimbabwe). Mkosnana made a run and fired off a low blast from the top of the box to beat Roger Scully.
The goal got Dartmouth fired up for the remaining three minutes, but there was not enough time for the Green to score an equalizer.
Milligan finished with four saves in goal as did Scully.
Dartmouth will be back in action this Saturday, Oct. 11 when it hosts Yale at 4:30 p.m.
