TROY, N.Y. -The Dartmouth men's hockey team exploded for five goals in its second victory of the season over Rensselaer on Saturday in Houston Field House. Sophomores Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) and Joe Stejskal (Grand Rapids, Minn.) each had two goals in the winning effort as the Big Green had three power play strikes on the night.
Fleming potted the first goal of the contest at 5:04 in the first. Jim Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) came streaking down the boards on the stick side of the net, passing to Fleming in the slot as he struck for his third goal on the weekend. Gaudet's older brother, Joe also assisted on the play.
The Engineers tied the contest with 3:49 left in the period. Goaltender Jody O'Neill (Nepean, Ont.) was in position and sprawled out to cover up the puck but Chase Polacek was able to tuck the puck under the goalie's pad for the tying goal.
The Big Green took the lead very early in the second period when Stejskal gathered a rebound for a power play strike, his second in two games. Then with 3:00 left in the stanza the Big Green, on the power play, won the faceoff on netminder Alan York's stick side. Stejskal got the puck and took a quick shot, slamming it home to give his team a three-goal lead. Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.) and Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) picked up the helpers on both of Stejskal's strikes.
The Engineers got one back on the power play with just six seconds left in the frame as Patrick Cullen lit the lamp for the home team. The goal was only the third on the power play Dartmouth has given up this season.
After two periods the Big Green was totally controlling play, outshooting the Engineers, 27- 18.
RPI came out firing in the final period of play as the Engineers started to put pressure on O'Neill but it was the Big Green that was able to capitalize on the momentum as Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) scored his first goal of the season off a power play strike at 12:56. The sophomore went top shelf on York to give his team a two-goal lead late in the game. Jones and Estoclet each picked up their third points of the contest with the assists.
The final nail for the home team was an empty netter by Dartmouth's Fleming as Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) and Joe Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) each picked up the assists.
O'Neill was spectacular in net, making 26 saves while York had 31 for the home team. Dartmouth is 2-2 overall, 2-1 in the ECAC while RPI falls to 2-6-1, 1-2 in the ECAC.
Dartmouth will be back in action next week with its first ECAC Hockey slate of weekend contests. On Friday the Big Green will take on St. Lawrence at 7:00 and then Clarkson on Saturday at 7:00.
