Peisch Sets Record, Field Hockey Falls to Cornell in Final Game

ITHACA, N.Y. ? Sophomore Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany) set the Dartmouth program record for assists in a season with two today, but it wasn't enough as the Big Green fell to Cornell, 3-2, in the final Ivy League game of the season.

Peisch finished the season with 16 helpers, which put her past Lauren Scopaz '99 who posted 14 back in 1999.

Cornell (11-5, 6-1 Ivy) got on the board first, 7:30 minutes into the opening half as Kelley Kantarian put the Big Red on top 1-0 with the assist going to Abbi Horn. Less than three minutes later Cornell added to its lead with a goal by Catie Del Stio to push the lead up to 2-0 at the 24:37 mark of the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) was able to make the initial save, but Del Stio found the back of the net.

Dartmouth (6-11, 4-3 Ivy) would fight back with its first goal coming 1:20 after Cornell added it's second of the game. Senior co-captain Ashley Hines (Newburyport, Mass.) tallied her 10th goal of the season, with the assist going to Peisch for the record breaker.

Nine minutes into the second half, the Big Red increased the lead to 3-1 as Del Stio posted her second of the game with the assist going to Stepani Brownstein.

Hines added her second of the game with no time remaining on a penalty corner. Peisch and senior co-captain Kristen McCormick (Stoughton, Mass.) earned the assists. For McCormick, she recorded nine assists this season, which is a career-high.

Dartmouth, however, ran out of time and fell 3-2 and with the lost the Big Green finished the Ivy League season in third place, tied with Penn.

Vakiener finished the game with eight saves, while Cornell's Melanie Jue made three saves to earn the win.
