MIDDLEBURY, Vt. ? Dartmouth senior Susan Dunklee won Friday's 5-kilometer race with a time of 13:16.6 while Dartmouth captain and senior teammate Elsa Sargent was close behind in second place as the Dartmouth ski team competed in the first day of the Middlebury Carnival.
Sylvan Ellefson from Bates won the men's 10-kilometer free technique race with a time of 22:22.2 as Wyatt Fereday from Colby finished in second. Dartmouth junior Glenn Randall came in third. Big Green freshmen Nils Koons, whose top ten finishes have been steadily increasing in frequency this season, scored a sixth place finish with senior teammate Dakota Blackhorse Von-Jess finishing behind him in 12th place.
Although the Big Green alpine teams had some trouble in the slalom race, several Dartmouth athletes had strong finishes to keep the Big Green afloat in the overall standings. Lyndee Janowiak from UVM won the slalom with a time of 1:37.35 as UNH's Veronique Archambault-Leger finished in second with Dartmouth freshmen Courtney Hammond in third. Freshmen Kelsey Roddick backed Hammond's third place with an eighth place finish.
Charles Christianson from Williams' won the men's slalom race with a time of 1:30.39 with Vincent Lebrun-Fortin from Colby behind him in second and Andrew Wagner from Middlebury in third. Big Green junior Rusty Heise, who has been one of Dartmouth's most consistent point scorers this year, lead the team with his 13th place finish. Sophomore teammate Francis Fortin-Houle finished just behind him in 14th and freshmen Ace Tarberry was 22nd.
Middlebury is in the overall lead with 459 points with Dartmouth close behind in second with 449 points and UVM is in third with 435. The classic cross-country races and giant slalom races will be held tomorrow, Feb. 23 after which the 2008 EISA Championship title will be announced and presented. The 2008 NCAA Championships will be held in Bozeman, MT on March 6-8.
