HANOVER, N.H. ? Departing captains
Johnathan Ball (Memphis, Tenn.) and
Michael Giovacchini (Salt Lake City, Utah) were honored as the men's basketball team held its end-of-year banquet Sunday, March 9. As together they received the Captain's Award from head coach
Terry Dunn, Ball and Giovacchini were given a standing ovation by those in attendance. Ball's dedication to Big Green basketball throughout the year was also recognized, as he took home the John DiLorio '56 Award for hustle, drive, and determination.
Dartmouth's award for Outstanding Rebounder could go to no one but junior
Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.), as Barnett led the Ivy League this year in defensive and overall rebounds. Barnett was also named Big Green basketball's Most Valuable Player. With a year left to play for Dartmouth, Barnett's senior year should prove to be very exciting.
Receiving Dartmouth's award for Outstanding Defense for the second consecutive year was junior
DeVon Mosley (Mesquite, Texas). Also for the second straight year, the Alvin F. “Doggie” Julian Award for spirit and enthusiasm was awarded to sophomore
Robby Pride (Denver, Colo.). In the spirit of the award, Pride sported a wide grin as he accepted his prize.
Splitting the Rudy LaRusso '59 Most Improved Player Award were freshmen
John Marciano (Roselle Park, N.J.) and
Elgin Fitzgerald (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Marciano, currently at home awaiting surgery on a broken hand, was unable to attend the ceremony. Fitzgerald was called up a second time as the recipient of Dartmouth's “Hard Hat” Award. Assistant coach
Dean Christian praised Fitzgerald highly, pointing at the six-foot-nine sophomore and stating, “My son means the world to me, and I want my son to be like him.”
