HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's tennis team bested the Princeton Tigers 5-2 tonight for the first time in several years, in an exciting match-up in Boss Tennis Center and Gordon Pavilion.
A shake up in the doubles line up proved the formula for success. Although the doubles team of
Mark Brodie (Greensboro, N.C.) and
Jeffrey Schechtman (Highland Park, Ill.), previously undefeated in the Ivies, gave up an 8-5 set to the Tigers, the new team of
Daniel Freeman (Chatsworth, Calif.) and
Justin Tzou (Cupertino, Calif.) as well as that of
Ari Gayer (Hollis, N.Y.) and
Curtis Roby (New York City, N.Y.) gave life to the match. Both teams achieved convincing wins and brought home the doubles point for the Big Green.
Singles matches also made a strong charge out of the gate, winning five of the first six sets. The first off the court was Gayer, who revenged last years loss to Charlie Brozens with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout. Roby finished his match just shortly after Gayer, winning 6-2, 6-2 and putting the Green up 3-0. The only first-set loss was by Schechtman, who immediately came alive winning the 2nd set handily at 6-2. The fourth and decisive team point was then brought home by senior Brodie, with a convincing win over #3 regionally-ranked Peter Captovic 6-3, 6-2. This took the pressure off of the Big Green, and the rest of the matches were finished by super breakers or, in the case of the #3 match, the Princeton player retiring.
The win puts Dartmouth at 8-9 for the season. The Big Green will face Penn tomorrow at 2:00 pm in Boss Tennis Center and Gordon Pavilion.
