HANOVER, N.H. - The defending co-champion University of Pennsylvania came to town today to take on the Dartmouth men's tennis team, as the Big Green suffered a close 4-3 defeat at the hands of the Quakers.
The doubles point seemed well in hand to start out, as the team of
Ari Gayer (Hollis, N.Y.) and
Curtis Roby (New York, N.Y.) had their set well under control at No. 3, and the team of
Daniel Freeman (Chatsworth, Calif.) and
Justin Tzou (Cupertino, Calif.) were up two to start at No. 2. Unfortunately, the latter match slipped away from Freeman and Tzou, and the team point went to Penn.
In singles,
Mark Brodie (Greensboro, N.C.) at No. 1 faced one of his few losses from this past year, #2 regionally-ranked Jason Pinsky. Once again, Pinsky played a tough match and Penn was up two points on the Big Green. However, Freeman proceeded to go out strong, going up 5-0 before his opponent retired, putting the Green on the board.
Jeffrey Schechtman (Highland Park, Ill.) started slow going into the match, winning the second set but being unable to bring home the third as Penn went up 3-1. Tzou played some great long points and won a close 7-6, 7-5 battle at the No. 3 spot, while the most spectacular comeback was posted by Roby. Down 2-5 and several match points into the third set, Roby fought back to win in the third, putting the Green even at 3-3.
In the last match on the courts, Gayer was in a third-set battle, but unfortunately, serving at 4-5, he could not hold, as Penn won the match-up 4-3.
Men's tennis will play their last home match of the season next week against Brown University, on April 18 at 3:00 pm.
