Led by seniors Tory Sheppard and Lauren Strickler, the Big Green women's golf team gets the 2008-09 season under way on their home course at Hanover Country Club this weekend. Play begins on Saturday with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. while Sunday's action tees off on the first and ninth holes at 8 a.m. Last year, Dartmouth placed third out of the 14 teams that competed.Last year, Dartmouth placed third out of the 14 teams that competed.
Among the teams competing are a pair of Ivy League schools in Brown and Harvard, the latter of which won the Dartmouth Invitational last year. A total of 17 schools will participate this year.
Head Coach Kevin Gibson, beginning his 11th full season at the helm of the program, has an influx of young talent joining the squad this year, as four of the eight members of the team are freshmen. The other returning members from a year ago are sophomores Katie Gulemi and Yolanda Chia-Yi Lin.
Sheppard and Strickler were the two most consistent golfers last fall for the Big Green, posting the team's top two scores in three of five fall events. Gulemi joined the rotation late in the fall, then had a terrific tournament at William & Mary last spring, placing sixth overall in a field of more than 100 golfers.
The Dartmouth Invitational is the first of five scheduled tournaments for the women this fall, four coming in consecutive weekends.
