PRINCETON, N.J. -- Sophomore Katie Gulemi was the top Big Green golfer on the first day of the Princeton Invitational at the Springdale Golf Club, finishing the day six-over par as Dartmouth ended the first round in 14th place at 44-over (332) on the par-72, 6,138-yard course. Host Princeton holds a four-stroke lead over Harvard, having posted a 298 (10-over) on its home course.
Gulemi (Fairfield, Conn.) played very well over the front nine at even par, while senior Tory Sheppard (Fishers, Ind.) was just two over on the first nine holes. The back nine proved to be a bit more difficult for the duo, however, with Sheppard signing her card with an 81. Gulemi's 78 put her in a tie for 24th place among the individuals.
Others participating were senior Lauren Strickler (Akron, Ohio) with an 84, tied for 57th; and a pair of freshmen in Heather Roland (Newtown Square, Pa.) and Marietta Smith (Mount Prospect, Ill.) who shot 89 and 90, respectively.
Dartmouth will attempt to fight its way higher in the 16-team invitational in the final round tomorrow.
