HANOVER, N.H. - With a 5-2 victory over Rensselar the Dartmouth men's hockey (11-7-2, 8-4-1 ECAC) team picked up two important points at Thompson Arena in an ever-shifting ECAC Hockey. The Big Green used goals by Joe Gaudet (Etna, N.H.), Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.), Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.), Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.) and Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.) all helped secure the victory as Dartmouth moves into third place in the league standings.
Gaudet got his team on the board just :28 into the contest. Andrew Owsiak (Moose Jaw, Sask.) got the puck out of the corner, passing quickly to linemate Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.). Jones shot to Gaudet who was waiting to the right of the cage as the junior banged home his fourth goal of the season.
At 10:44 of the same period Shields gave the Big Green a two goal lead. The junior put a slow shot on goalie Mathia Lange that went behind but as the senior attempted to sweep the puck out he instead knocked it back in for the score.
A 5-on-3 for RPI (6-18-2, 5-8-1 ECAC) at 11:14 of the second got the visitors on the board as Chase Polacek buried one over goalie Jody O'Neill's shoulder.
Fleming got it back for the home team early in the third period as he skated down from center ice deking around a defender to fake Lange to the left, shooting into the right side of the net for his seventh goal of the season and his third in five games.
Less than three minutes later the Engineers scored again when Seth Klerer teamed up with Joel Malchuk and Kurt Colling as the visitors woule not go away.
But as Dartmouth had its own 5-on-3 opportunity the Big Green began to put the game away. A power play goal at 10:13 by Estoclet gave Dartmouth a two-goal lead. Shields got the puck on the point, passing down low to Fleming who passed across Estoclet for the bing, bang, boom play that gave the sophomore a team-leading 22 points.
Reeds capped the game with his third short handed goal of the season as the sophomore faked a pass, went around a defender as he waited for Lange to make a move before putting the puck in around the netminder.
O'Neill finished with 27 saves for Dartmouth while Lange had 25 for Rensselaer.
The Big Green will be back in action tomorrow night with a 7:00 pm match up with Union.
