SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Dartmouth field hockey team built a 4-1 halftime lead and held off a rally from Georgetown to squeeze by with a 5-4 win thanks to three goals from sophomore Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.), including the game-winner.
Hood led the Big Green with two first-half tallies and the game-winner coming with 3:18 remaining in the game. Classmate Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) and freshman Samantha McPherson (Ventura, Calif.) each added goals. Everett netted her sixth of the season, while McPherson scored her second goal of the year. Sophomore Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) tied her career high in wins after earning her sixth victory of the season with three saves.
Georgetown (1-12) had four different goal scorers in the game with Kristen Volpe leading the way with a goal and three assists for five points. Clodagh Coghlan got the start in net and gave up four goals in 29 minutes of play and was relieved by Brianna Fereira, who gave up just one goal and made eight saves in the loss.
Dartmouth (6-5) got on the board first 10:41 into the game with Everett's sixth of the year, coming unassisted. Less than two minutes later, Hood increased the lead to 2-0 on a penalty corner with the assists going to juniors Rebecca Sobel (Larchmont, N.Y.) and Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.).
Hood struck again with 15:48 left in the half with the assist going to McHenry for her second of the game to make it 3-0 Big Green. Dartmouth pushed the lead up to 4-0 as two freshmen hooked up with McPherson scoring her second of the year with the assist going to Maya Herm (Bethesda, Md.).
Georgetown cut the lead to 4-1 with 8:45 left in the half as Annie Wilson scored on a penalty corner with the assists going to Volpe and Annika Bannon.
The Hoyas continued their scoring ways into the second half as Georgetown reeled off four unanswered goals, which included Wilson's at the end of the first half. Micaela O'Toole got the Hoyas to within two scores, just three minutes into the second frame. With under 15 minutes to play, Kate Wingo cut the lead to one and Volpe tied the game with 9:20 left with an unassisted tally.
The four-straight scores by the Hoyas didn't discourage the Big Green, however, and Hood made sure that Dartmouth didn't leave the field with a loss. She scored the hat trick with 3:18 left to give the Big Green its sixth win of the year and fifth in the last six games.
Surprisingly Dartmouth only outshot Georgtown 8-5 in the opening half, but made its shots count. Overall, the Big Green held a 23-14 shot advantage and for the first time this season each team earned the same amount of penalty corners with both schools earning nine.
Dartmouth continues its trip to upstate New York as the Big Green faces sixth-ranked Syracuse tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
