HANOVER, N.H. - Sophomore Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) pushed aside a career-high 21 shots, but the Big Green failed to score as the Dartmouth field hockey team fell to sixth-ranked Syracuse, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon.
Dartmouth (6-6) got 21 stops from Vakiener with 12 coming in the second half. The Big Green was outshot by the Orange, 39-7, and Syracuse had an incredible advantage in penalty corners with 23 to Dartmouth's one.
Syracuse (12-1) had two different goal scorers as Amy Kee and Kristin Girouard each tallied goals in the win. Martina Loncarica and Maggie Befort also recorded points in the win with each player getting an assist on Syracuse's second tally.
The teams played even on the scoreboard in the opening half until the Orange broke through with 13 seconds left until the break. Girouard tallied her third of the season, coming unassisted. In the half, Dartmouth was outshot 19-3 and faced a difficult disadvantage in corners with one all half to 12 by Syracuse.
The score stayed the same until Amy Kee gave the Orange some breathing room with 1:29 left in the game on a penalty corner. The Big Green was once again outshot by a large margin in the final as Syracuse posted 20 shots to Dartmouth's four and had an 11-0 advantage in penalty corners.
The Big Green will be back in Ivy play on Oct. 17 as Dartmouth travels to Yale to face the Bulldogs in a 12 p.m. start.
