CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Sophomore Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) broke the school record for points in a season and the Big Green field hockey team had a balanced attack with five goal scorers in the 5-3 win on Saturday against Harvard.
Hood eclipsed the school record in the first half on her 17th goal of the year to give her 42 points. The record of 41 was held by Kim Jenkin '02 and Lauren Scopaz '00, which came back in 1999. Also with her 17th score she is one goal away from tying Jenkin for most goals in a season.
Dartmouth (9-7, 4-2 Ivy) spread the offense around today as the Big Green got goals from five different players, including freshmen Maya Herm (Bethesda, Md.) and Samantha McPherson (Ventura, Calif.). Herm also added an assist and posted a team-high three points. Sophomore Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) added her seventh of the season to get the Big Green started and junior co-captain Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany) recorded two assists in the win. Freshman Jenna Stearns continued her hot streak with another win, which makes it three-straight for the first-year goalkeeper. She made four stops in the win.
Harvard (5-10, 2-4 Ivy) got a goal and an assist from Carly Dickson and goals from Katelin Wahl and Emma Keller. Cynthia Tassapoulos got the loss in net for the Crimson, making eight saves on the afternoon.
Everett put Dartmouth on the board first just 2:32 into the half for her seventh tally of the year, which puts her third on the team. Peisch sent a pass in from left to right and it was redirected in by Everett. Hood broke the school record 10 minutes later as she connected with Peisch and junior Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.) on a penalty corner to put the Big Green up 2-0.
Harvard cut the lead to 2-1 with 17 minutes remaining in the half. Keller put the Crimson to within one with the unassisted tally. The initial shot from the Crimson was saved by Stearns, but Keller was there for the cleanup.
Dartmouth jumped back up by two goals three minutes later as Herm added her first collegiate goal, coming unassisted to make it 3-1. Herm was involved again three minutes following her goal with an assist on McPherson's fifth of the season to increase the lead to 4-1. The lead was the largest of the game and the Big Green did not give it away.
Harvard made a move late in the first half with a goal from Dickson with the assist going to Kristin Bannon to slice the Dartmouth lead to 4-2.
In the second half, the Crimson made it two unanswered goals to make it a one-goal contest at 4-3 on a score by Wahl. Dickson was helping out again with an assist on the play.
The Big Green stopped the bleeding with a goal from junior Rebecca Sobel (Larchmont, N.Y.) to give Dartmouth the 5-3 win to move to 4-2 in Ivy League play.
Harvard had a 10-8 advantage on penalty corners and was only able to score on one opportunity. The Big Green finished the game on top in shots with a 18-15 advantage.
Dartmouth will back in Hanover this coming Saturday as the Big Green host Cornell on Senior Day, starting at 12 p.m. at Chase Field.
