September 24, 2009 - Dartmouth Athletes Volunteer at the Prouty
By Jeff Friedman, Jaeger Civic Intern
This past summer, many Dartmouth student-athletes were active on campus and helped benefit the Upper Valley. The biggest service event over the summer was the Prouty, an annual event to raise money for the Norris Cotton Cancer Research Center. Volunteers bike, walk, or run to raise money for the great cause. Over 100 Dartmouth student-athletes participated in the event and some even did the 100 mile bike ride!
Lane Shipley, an '11 on the football team, Kevin De Regt, an '11 on the football team, Andrew Leonard, an '11 on the men's lacrosse team, and Dan Hochman, an '11 on the men's swimming team are just a few of the many athletes who rode 100 miles and helped raise thousands of dollars. Shipley has nothing but great things to say about his time at the Prouty as he recalled that “the day was amazing. For those of us that did the 100 mile ride, it started early as we were in the saddle at 6:30am. Ridding at a fairly leasurly pace, it took us about 8 hours to finish ridding (including stops at all that rest stations) but it was totally worth it. The day was really meaningful for all of us because nearly everyone has either had someone or knows someone who has been affected by cancer. The bike ride was great, but knowing that we did it for such a great cause made it that much more rewarding.” Hochman also agreed with Shipley that the Prouty was a great event. Hochman enthusiastically said that “It's pretty easy to lose sight of the larger picture, especially during sophomore summer. The 100 mile ride was very humbling because we completed it alongside such a diverse group of people from the Upper Valley.” Hochman continued to reiterate of the importance of the cause of the Prouty when he said that “I felt that riding the Prouty made us realize how lucky we are. It gave us an opportunity to have a really fun, though exhausting, day and to contribute to a very worthy cause.
Similarly, some athletes like Curtis Roby, an '11 on the men's tennis team, walked in the Prouty. Roby had a great time walking in the Prouty and really enjoyed the fact that he was able to raise money for cancer, a disease which affects so many. Roby said “the Prouty was an unbelievable event because it allowed so many Dartmouth students and Dartmouth athletes, in particular, do something physically strenuous while giving back and helping to raise money for such a worthwhile cause. I look forward to participating in more community service events like this in the future.”
Overall, the Prouty was a huge success and it allowed many Dartmouth students who were on for sophomore summer to branch out and help raise thousands of dollars for cancer. The athletes mentioned above are only a few of the many who participated in the Prouty. Again, Dartmouth student-athletes are giving back and contributing to the community in so many great ways!
