December 18, 2009 - Dartmouth Lacrosse Players Volunteer at Upper Valley Haven
By Jeff Friedman, Jaeger Civic Intern
Recently, a few members of the Dartmouth Men's Lacrosse
Team, including Senior Co-Captain Chris Root and fellow '10 Kevin
Davis, volunteered at the Upper Valley Haven. The Haven, located in
White River Junction, VT, provides a great atmosphere to help assist
families in need of food and shelter. Its aim is to help provide a
positive environment and make a positive change in the lives of those
who are impoverished and in need of help. Root and Davis mostly worked
to help upkeep the state of the property. Root said that “Kevin Davis
and myself went and did some weeding and gardening” to help provide a
clean and safe haven for those living there. Root also commented that
they documented supplies and performed some manual labor, such as
lifting boxes and moving supplies around the property. Root and Davis
were both very encouraged to see how they were able to help assist
families and individuals who live day-by-day looking for food and
shelter.
Dartmouth Athletics hopes that many more student-athletes and Dartmouth students continue to volunteer at the Haven. It is truly an amazing place. In 2008, the Haven provided shelter for 34 families and provided a week's worth of food on 13, 512 occasions to individuals from 1,710 different families. It also had 6,903 visits for bread and fresh produce and 4,441 visits for free clothing in 2008. In 2009, we hope and assume that the numbers increased but we must keep remember to give back to the community and The Haven provides a great environment to help make a difference in the lives of many families who are constantly looking for support.
