HANCOCK, Vt. - Upon the conclusion of the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) carnival events this weekend hosted by Middlebury College, the Big Green continued its undefeated season by winning its fifth straight set of alpine and cross country competitions. Although a narrow victory, The Big Green led with 881.5 points, over the University of Vermont in second place with 866 points, and Middlebury with 834 points in third.
Both men's and women's cross country endured an atypical event on Saturday; the 3 x 5-kilometer freestyle relay. The Dartmouth women annihilated the competition, leading by nearly a minute over second place. The winning team was comprised of Dartmouth sophomores Rosie Brennan and
Ida Sargent, and freshman
Sophie Caldwell; their combined time was 49:37.7. In second place was a UVM team including Jennie Bender, Johanna Mayerhofer and Caitlin Patterson. The University of New Hampshire came in third place via the efforts of Sarah Wright, Marlijne Cook and Kathryn Miller. The second Dartmouth team, comprised of freshman
Stephanie Crocker, junior
Katie Bono, and senior
Hannah Dreissigacker, finished 6th.
In a sprint to the finish, Middlebury skiers Tim Reynolds, Patrick Johnson, and Simeon Hamilton beat out the Big Green for first place in the men's cross country division, but the Dartmouth team made up of senior
Ben True, junior
Patrick O'Brien and sophomore
Nils Koons took a close second. Alex Taylor, Sam Kapala, and Keith Kantack of Williams comprised the third place team. Dartmouth's second team placed 7th, with seniors
Dakota Blackhorse-von Jess,
Ben Koons, and
Glenn Randall finishing strong.
In the alpine competitions, Leah McLaughry of Middlebury won the women's giant slalom with a time of 2:06.98. Dartmouth sophomore
Kelsey Roddick had an outstanding race, placing second; Middlebury's Mattie Ford rounded out the podium in third. Sophomore
Courtney Hammond was Dartmouth's second finisher, in 10th place, followed by junior Tina Roberts in 20th. Freshman
Erin Fucigna and junior
Hayley Jones placed 28th and 31st, respectively.
The Big Green alpine men had a bit of a tough start on a tricky course, but managed to hold it together. William's College skier Eric Mann led with a time of 2:02.12, followed by Marsh Gooding of UVM in second and UNH's Sean McNamara in third. Junior
Francis Fortin-Houle was Dartmouth's first finisher in 11th place, with freshman
Luke McLaughry close behind in 14th, and sophomore
Ace Tarberry in 17th. Senior
Rusty Heise and freshman
Braden Long took 33rd and 37th.
Colby College will host the final EISA carnival events-the Eastern Championships-on February 26-27 at Sugarloaf Mountain and the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center. These races will be a final opportunity for racers to qualify for the NCAA Championships in March hosted by Bates College.
