PRINCETON, N.J. ? The Ivy League today released the postseason award winners for men's basketball as selected by the league coaches, and Dartmouth senior
Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) was chosen as the Player of the Year. He is just the second Big Green player to earn the award in the 35 years it has been given, joining Larry Lawrence '81 from the 1980-81 season.
The 6-6, 215-pound forward utilized his terrific athleticism at both ends of the floor to rank among the league leaders in numerous offensive and defensive categories. He finished the year with 542 points, the eighth most ever by a Big Green player, and a scoring average of 20.3 points per conference game to become Dartmouth's first Ivy scoring champion in 11 years. He scored at least 20 points in nine of the 14 Ivy contests, and 19 more in two other games. For the entire season, Barnett ranked among the league's top 10 in scoring (19.4 ppg, 1st), rebounding (5.6 rpg, 8th), free throw percentage (.820, 2nd), steals (1.3 spg, 8th), three-point field goal percentage (.409, 6th), three-pointers made (1.9, 3rd), blocked shots (1.2, 3rd) and minutes played (34.1, 5th).
On Dec. 2 at Vermont, Barnett posted a career-high 32 points in an 88-71 loss, but also had 30 more to lift Dartmouth to a 75-66 overtime victory for its first Ivy win of the year. He topped 20 points in exactly half of the games (14 of 28) and scored in double figures in all but two contests. On four occasions this year, Barnett was named the Ivy Player of the Week; no other player in the conference won it more than twice.
Barnett finished his career with 1,374 points to place him eighth on the school's all-time scoring list, while his 551 rebounds put him in 11th place. With 110 blocks and 111 steals in his four years, Barnett is the only player in Big Green history to register at least 100 in both categories.

Dartmouth, picked to finish the season seventh in the preseason polls, recorded a 7-7 record in the Ivy League ? its best mark in four years ? to tie for fourth place. The Big Green also swept Penn and Princeton on the road for the first time since the Ivy League was formed.
The all-conference teams were also announced, and Barnett was one of two players to be a unanimous selection for the first team, joining Ryan Wittman of Cornell. It had been 10 years since a Dartmouth player was named to the first team (Shaun Gee '00 in 1998-99). The league's Rookie of the Year (guard Chris Wroblewski) and Defensive Player of the Year (center Jeff Foote) were also from Cornell.
