SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Dartmouth softball team dropped both of its games on the first day of the Capital City Classic at Sacramento State. The Big Green dropped the first contest, 18-0 in five innings to UNLV and then lost to Colorado State, 6-1.
In the opening contest UNLV provided an offensive onslaught that proved too much for Dartmouth. The Rebels scored in every inning but one as Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) and Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) combined for the loss in the circle.
The Big Green had runners in scoring positions twice but were unable to get any across. Freshman Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.), sophomore Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) and junior Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) recorded the only hits for Dartmouth.
In the nightcap it was a rematch between the Big Green and the Rams and it was again Colorado State that was the victor. Khalil came up big for Dartmouth as she was 1-1 but reached on a hit by pitch, advancing to third both times.
The Big Green scored its lone run in the fourth. Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) started off with a single to the shortstop and then advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Khalil was hit by a pitch as Dartmouth had runners at first and second. A groundout moved both runners over before Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) singled to short, scoring Costello. A strikeout ended the inning for the Big Green.
In the circle Devin Lindsay (Whittier, Calif.) went the complete game, striking out three.
Dartmouth continues at Sacramento State's tournament with a noon matchup with BYU.
