SACRAMENTO, Calif. ? The Dartmouth softball team dropped its third game at the Capital City Classic when BYU took an 8-0 victory in five innings. The loss drops the Big Green to 5-8 while the Cougars
improved to 19-13.
Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) and Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) both earned the hits for Dartmouth while in the circle Devin Lindsay (Whittier, Calif.) picked up the loss.
In the bottom of the second inning a solo homer got BYU on the board before another run came across to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
BYU added two runs in the fourth inning before the fifth inning brought in four more runs for the Cougars to take the necessary 8-0 lead to call the game.
Paige Affleck
earned the win as the Cougars offense generated enough firepower to
eight-run the Big Green. She struck out eight batters, allowing only
two hits over five innings.
Dartmouth had several opportunities to get on the board. In the second Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.) led off the second with a walk before Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) safely bunted after the third baseman was unable to make a clean throw to first advancing Gleason to third. Gleason would get thrown out as the Big Green was unable to score Clarkson.
In BYU's half of the inning two batters grounded out to Gleason and Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) as the third out came when Lindsay struck out the lead-off batter for her second strikeout of the game. Then In the third, Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) started the offensive side of the inning by reaching first after being hit by a pitch. With one out Costello reached on a bunt but the Big Green was unable to score either, leaving two more on bases. The defense played well and Lindsay needed only to face four batters that inning.
Dartmouth continues play at the Capitol Classic at noon on Sunday with a matchup against host Sacramento State.
