WILLIAMSBURG, VA. ? Composed of three freshman and two seniors, the Dartmouth women's golf team opened the spring season by coming in 21st out of 22 teams, shooting 347-342 ? 690 in the First Market Bank Intercollegiate hosted by William and Mary.
Freshman Marietta Smith (Mount Prospect, Ill.) paced Dartmouth with a score of 169 (89-80) and finishiedtied for 79th. Senior Lauren Strickler (Akron, Ohio) posted rounds of 85-87 (172). Her first-round score of 85 was team low for the day. Strickler bested classmate Tory Sheppard (Fishers, Ind.) by one shot overall, who recorded scores of 86-87.
Two rookies, Heather Roland (Newtown Square, Pa.) and Kathleen Quirk (Kansas City, Mo.), rounded out the scoring for the Big Green. Roland posted rounds of 87-89 for a score of 176 while Quirk shot a 185 with rounds of 96-89.
Alabama swept the team and individual titles. The Crimson Tide, placing four players in the top 10, took home the team title with a score of 609 (306-303). Rhea Nair, competing individually for the Tide, recorded rounds of 75-74 to take home first place with an overall 149.
The Big Green return to action Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28, in Crystal River, Fla. with the University of Cincinnati Spring Invitational.
