LOS ANGELES - On a beautiful day at LMU Tennis Center, the Dartmouth men's tennis team was edged by Loyola Marymount , 4-3, in the first annual Betty Warner Cup.
Dartmouth won a close doubles round 2-1. Two of the three matches went into tiebreakers. Borja Malet and Renzo Maggi took home LMU's only doubles victory in the No. 1 spot. Malet and Maggi came from behind to defeat junior
Daniel Freeman (Chatsworth, Calif.) and sophomore
Stephen Greif (San Antonio, Texas) 9-8. The Big Green recovered in won the final two doubles matches as the pair of sophomore
Curtis Roby (New York, N.Y.) and senior captain
Ari Gayer (Hollis, N.Y.) earn a win at No. 2, while freshman
Chris Ho (Los Altos, Calif.) and junior
Justin Tzou (Cupertino, Calif.) brought home the doubles point at No. 3.
After a short break between rounds LMU came back to win the match in singles. The Lions took home the first four singles matches and the victory. Friedman, Grief and Gayer dropped all of their singles matches, while Tzou and Ho claimed victory at No. 4 and 6, respectively. The team match came down to Roby and Maggi at the No. 3 position. Maggi gave the Lions the team win with a 6-3, 6-4, straight-set victory.
Loyola Marymount hosted their largest home crowd all season. The LMU community came out to show their support and pay their respects to Betty Warner, the late senior associate athletics director. International Student Services, members of the athletics department, coaches, and student athletes from women's soccer, women's water polo, men's water polo, men's soccer, women's basketball, volleyball, cross country, track, and golf, cheered on the victors.
The tennis community also came out to show their support for a beloved member. A representative from the Southern California Tennis Association as well as Jane Goodman, director in charge of umpires for Southern California as well as the NCAA National Championships, were in attendance.
The Big Green will be back in action in their final match of the spring break trip as Dartmouth faces San Diego at 3 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
