NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Dartmouth softball team swept Columbia on Monday afternoon, winning 8-1 and 3-1. In the first game of the day the Big Green scored in the first four innings before allowing the Lions to put a run across. In the second game, Columbia held on to a 1-0 lead for a solid five innings, before Dartmouth scored two runs in the fifth, to take the 3-1 lead.
With the two wins, Dartmouth improves to 10-11 overall, 3-1 in the Ivy
League, while Columbia stands at 9-17, 1-3 in the Ivy League.
Game one saw Dartmouth take an early lead on the home team, scoring two runs in the first, three in the second and one each in the third and fourth, as the Big Green went up 7-0. Columbia wouldn't get on the board until the bottom of the sixth inning.
Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) and Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) both scored in the first inning as Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.) had the first Big Green hit of the day. Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.), Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) and Yee all came around to score in the next inning. Kolodziej and Parker both recorded doubles as Yee added a single. In the third a double and a run by Gleason helped the visitors to a 6-0 lead. Yee would score one more in the fourth.
Dartmouth sealed the 8-1 victory off a home run by Gleason in the top of the seventh inning.
Gleason was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs while Yee was 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
In the circle Devin Lindsay (Whittier, Calif.) got the win as she went the complete game. She allowed one hit and one earned run while striking out five Columbia batters.
The second match up of the day saw the Lions take an early lead on the Big Green. Columbia scored in the bottom of the second inning when a single got just past freshman Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) iin the circle. A sacrifice bunt and a single deep to right field plated the first run of Game Two.
In the top of the fourth inning, Dartmouth was able to tie the game up at one apiece, as two walks and a fielding error brought Kolodziej home for the Big Green. Dartmouth was able to take the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth, on a home run by freshman Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.). A third run scored by Jackie Begay (Fort Defiance, Ariz.) on a Costello RBI single. The Big Green was able to tally six outs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, to put Columbia away and take the 3-1 win.
Costello, Yee and Barker each recorded two hits in the second game. Costello also added two RBIs. Barker went the complete game to pick up her fifth win of the season. She struck out first for a season-high.
Up next, Dartmouth hits the road for a nonconference game at UMass. The Big Green and the Minutewomen will square off on Wednesday, April 1 at 4:00 p.m. Dartmouth will open up the home portion of its schedule this weekend with Ivy League doubleheaders against Princeton on Saturday and Cornell on Sunday.
