July 29, 2009 - Dartmouth Athletes Volunteer for SEAD
By Jeff Friedman, Jaeger Civic Intern
Every summer, a number of Dartmouth students take classes at Dartmouth for their “Sophomore Summer,” a term referred to the summer after one's sophomore year. This summer, there are a number of student athletes who are not only enjoying the warm (or rainy) weather at Dartmouth but also volunteering their time to help the community. Georgiana Smyser, an '11 on the women's tennis team, Fernando Rodriguez-Villa, an '11 on the men's track and field teams, and Ajmah Houston, an '11 on the Football team are volunteering for the SEAD program. Rodriguez-Villa describes SEAD (Summer Enrichment at Dartmouth) as a “program that brings promising students from underprivileged neighborhoods in New York City, Philadelphia, and New Hampshire to Dartmouth for a month long program.” It is a very unique program in that Dartmouth students serve as mentors to the students in the SEAD program
Rodriguez-Villa, along with Smyser and Houston, serves as an academic coach. He says, “We cover key high school material and teach good academic habits.” Rodriguez-Villa says that the program has been extremely rewarding and exciting. Smyser also further described the program and said that she “provides Academic support to the SEAD students via three weekly two-hour study halls, as well as outside help whenever they want it.” Smyser also said, “I'll also be spending time with them at planned SEAD events like BBQ's and mini golf tournaments.” Smyser really enjoys spending time with the SEAD kids and loves to be able to mentor them in any way possible.
SEAD is a
unique program that many students at Dartmouth,
including several student-athletes have the opportunity to be involved in.
Hopefully, more student-athletes in the future will continue to volunteer in
SEAD.
