HANOVER, N.H. - After a tough opening to its season, the Dartmouth field hockey team will look to rebound this weekend with a pair of non-conference matchups on the road.
The Big Green (0-1) dropped its season opener at Maine last Sunday despite a career-high six points from junior Rebecca Sobel (Larchmont, N.Y.) with two goals and two assists as she factored in all four goals for Dartmouth. Also adding scores for the Big Green were sophomores Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) and Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.). Hood recorded an assist as well to three points on the afternoon. Sophomore Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) faced a shot barrage from the Black Bears and posted a career-high 23 saves in net.
Maine dominated in the shot department with a 41-15 advantage and the Black Bears earned a slight lead in penalty corners with eight to the Big Green's five.
Providence (1-2) is in the middle of six-game homestand and will be hosting the Big Green under the lights on Friday night. The Friars are coming off a 4-3 win against New Hampshire, which marked their first win of the season on September 6.
Senior Nellie Poulin is coming off her second career hat trick and she currently leads the Friars with eight points on four goals. Sophomore Ashlyn Hudson who is second on the team in points with three, also added a goal in the game against New Hampshire. Senior Goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain is coming off a 10-save performance against the Wildcats as she earned her first win of the year in her second start.
Last Year, Providence defeated Dartmouth, 3-0 in Hanover and the Big Green has been shutout in the last two meetings between the two schools. The teams are tied in the all-time series history with each earning three wins. The first meeting came back in 1981 with Dartmouth taking home a 1-0 win.
On Sunday, the Big Green will be heading to Holy Cross (0-3) to face the Crusaders at 2 p.m. Holy Cross enters the contest with an 0-3 record with losses to Harvard, No. 14 Boston College and Connecticut.
Senior Courtney Callahan has been the leader for the Crusaders with three goals in the past two games, including two against the Eagles in a 6-2 loss last weekend. Junior Alanna Sikorski is the only other Holy Cross player to record a score this season as she added the lone goal against Harvard in the season opener. In net, Kelly Casey has appeared and started in all three games for the Crusaders and has given up 14 goals and has posted 29 saves. She has recorded a 9.00 goals against average and a .674 save percentage.
This will be the 19th meeting between these two schools with the Big Green holding a slim 10-8 lead in victories. Holy Cross has won five of the last seven contests, including last season's 3-2 win in Worcester. The team's first met back in 1985 with Dartmouth coming away with a 2-1 win.
