LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – At the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) events over the weekend hosted by Saint Lawrence University, the Dartmouth ski team battled its way to victory in the first carnival of the season. With a total of 958 points, the Big Green claimed an impressive 108 point lead over University of Vermont in second place with 849 points. Not far behind, the University of New Hampshire took third with 828 points.
At Saturday's women's slalom competition held at Whiteface Mountain, Dartmouth junior
Courtney Hammond (Mercer Island, Wash.) captured the win with a combined time of 1:52.33 over University of Vermont competitors Megan Ryley in second place and Lyndee Janowiak in third. Dartmouth senior
Christine Roberts (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) was the Big Green's next finisher, in sixth place, followed by sophomore teammate
Erin Fucigna (Hopkinton, Mass.) in eight. With the Big Green finishing the race with five athletes in the top-20, Dartmouth senior
Hayley Jones (Whitehouse, N.J.) placed 15th, and junior
Kelsey Roddick (Galena, Ill.) took 17th.
UVM's David Donaldson took the win in the men's slalom event with a combined time of 1:36.30, chased by Dartmouth junior Ace Tarberry (North Conway, N.H.) in second place. Vincent Lebrun-Fortin of Colby College rounded out the podium in third place. More solid finishes from the Big Green included Dartmouth sophomores
Braden Long (Clarksburg, Ont.) in 14th place,
Trevor Leafe (Monroe, N.H.) in 21st place, and
Luke McLaughry (Norwich, Vt.) in 23rd place.
The strong podium appearances from the Big Green's alpine teams were mirrored in both men's and women's cross country results. In the men's 20-kilometer freestyle mass-start race at the Lake Placid Olympic Complex, Dylan McGuffin of the University of New Hampshire claimed the win with a time of 54:58. Dartmouth senior
Patrick O'Brien (Putney, Vt.) and junior
Nils Koons (Sidney, Maine) followed closely in second and third place, respectively.
Eric Packer (Anchorage, Alaska), a Dartmouth sophomore, finished fifth, while freshman
Sam Tarling took eighth place. Dartmouth sophomore
Gordon Vermeer (Minneapolis, Minn.) placed 25th, and freshman Dreissigacker placed 30th.
On the women's side, Friday's leader, Dartmouth junior
Ida Sargent (Orleans, Vt.) made a reappearance on top of the podium in the 15-kilometer freestyle mass-start event with a time of 47:45. Runner-up Caitlin Patterson of the University of Vermont took second place, while Dartmouth junior Rosie Brennan (Park City, Utah) followed in third. Dartmouth sophomore
Erika Flowers (Bozeman, Mt.) finished in fourth place, just ahead of senior teammate Katie Bono (Minneapolis, Minn.) in sixth place.
The competition will resume next weekend on January 22-23 at events hosted by Saint Michael's College at the Sleepy Hollow Ski Center and Smugglers Notch Resort in Huntington, VT.
