HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team dropped its first round game of the Ledyard National Bank Classic to Northeastern on Saturday in Thompson Arena. The Huskies used a three-goal effort in the second period alone to take a 7-0 victory over the home team.
A fluke shot on net by the visiting team gave Northeastern an early lead, just 1:38 into the game. Kyle Kraemer appeared to just lift the puck up to get it down in front of the net, instead the puck got by Big Green netminder Jody O'Neill (Nepean, Ont.) for the early score.
The Huskies got another goal at 8:50 as Northeastern was working with a 5-on-3. With two Dartmouth players in the box Alex Tuckerman took a pass in front of the net from Wade MacLeod and shot glove side on O'Neill, putting the puck over the sophomore's shoulder.
Back-to-back goals by the Huskies, including the first shorthanded strike Dartmouth has given up this year, midway through the second period had the visitors with a 4-0 lead before Big Green head coach Bob Gaudet called a timeout to try and slow Northeastern's momentum.
Coming out of the break rookie Charles Corsi (Rosemere, Que.) was put in at goal, seeing his first action in a green and white uniform.
A fight for the puck in the Dartmouth end had Corsi going one-on-one with NU's Drew Daniels. Daniels stripped defenseman Kyle Schussler (Okotoks, Alta.) and wrapped the puck around an out-of-position Corsi for the fifth goal of the game.
Dartmouth had a much more spirited third period of play but it was a case of too little, too late as the Big Green was unable to cut into the Huskies lead. A power play strike at 8:53 by Tyler McNeely and a head up play by Jake Newton late in the frame seemed to put a capper on the evening for the visiting Northeastern squad.
The loss drops the Big Green to 3-9 on the season and marks the first time since 2006 Dartmouth will not be in the championship game of its own tournament. The Big Green has made it to the championship game 15 times in the 20 years of hosting the event. Northeastern improves to 7-8-1 and will match up with UMass Lowell who was victorious over Holy Cross, 3-0 in the opening game of the tournament.
Dartmouth and Holy Cross will square off at 4:00 pm tomorrow while Lowell and Northeastern will battle in the 7:00 pm game.
