January 25, 2009 - Dartmouth Athletes Volunteer Around the World
This past fall, a number of Dartmouth Sophomores and Juniors were not on-campus due to the D-Plan. And while some were doing internships or working, there were a bunch of Dartmouth Student-Athletes who volunteered abroad. Andrea Imhof, an '11 on the Women's Track and Field team, spent the fall term volunteering with an organization called the Foundation for Sustainable Development in Kakamega. She was located in western Kenya and the organization trains interns in basic development principles and sends them to work with their partner organizations for 9 or 10 week programs. While she was in Kenya, Imhoff recalled, "I worked in a hospital doing two main projects, training staff in computer skills to help improve their data recording system and training a group of nurses in basic business skills to help them set up a canteen to generate income for the hospital." Andrea had a great time in Kenya and really enjoyed not only helping to train the people she worked with, but the first-hand experiences she observed in a Third World country. Kenya is a much different place than the United States and they are still in need of technology and privileges that we take for granted in America. With dedicated volunteers like Andrea committed to helping people worldwide, the world will certainly be a better place.
