PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball team played at Penn on Friday in a battle between two of the top teams in the Ivy League. The Big Green pushed the Quakers to five sets, but it wasn't enough with the home team winning, 3-2. The loss drops Dartmouth to 12-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
Dartmouth came out of the gate fast taking the first set, without allowing the Quakers to have a lead. The Big Green took the lead early and held it the rest of the set. The second and third sets were forgettable for Dartmouth. In both sets, the teams were even through the first few points, before the Quakers pulled away. In the second with the score tied at eight apiece, Penn went on a 17-8 run to end the set, 25-16. In the third, the Big Green led 8-6, before the Quakers won 19 of the last 25 points to win, 25-14.
In the fourth set, Dartmouth founds its rhythm and got back into the match. Led by Lexi Campbell (Salona Beach, Calif.), the squad went from losing, 15-11, to winning the set, 25-22. The sophomore had four kills on seven attempts and added six digs in the fourth.
All of the momentum the Big Green gained in the fourth set disappeared in the fifth. The Quakers took the lead early and didn't look back winning the fifth, 15-8. The loss is the second in a row for Dartmouth, and is the first time the team has had a losing streak all season.
Junior Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) led the Big Green with 16 kills, six assists and 12 digs. Joining Baird with double-digit kills was senior Kelsey Johnson (Carlsbad, Calif.) who finished with 12. Amber Bryant (Libertyville, Ill.) led the squad in digs with 18. Campbell ended the contest with six kills and 15 digs.
Lauren Martin led the Quakers with 19 kills. Martin was complemented by Julia Swanson with 15 kills and Amanda Pacheco with 13 kills. Megan Tryon dished the ball around with 53 assists. Penn improved to 7-9 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
The Big Green can't dwell on the loss for long, because they travel to league-leading Princeton on Saturday at 4 p.m.
