PRINCETON, N.J. - Facing the top team in the Ivy League, the Dartmouth women's volleyball team didn't have enough on Saturday. The Tigers defended their home court by sweeping the Big Green, 3-0. The loss is the third straight for Dartmouth and drops the team to 12-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
The Tigers started the match with a bang, winning the first six points and 11 of the first 14. Leading by eight, Princeton pushed its lead to 23-10 and it looked like it would cruise for a double-digit victory. The Big Green found some life and went on a 7-0 run, which included four kills by four different players. The Tigers used their second timeout to stop the momentum and won the last two points to finish the set, 25-17.
In the second, the two squads stayed close in the opening minutes and were tied at seven before Princeton made its move. The Tigers took a close set and blew it open with seven straight points and won 18 of the last 26 to win the set, 25-15. The Big Green never had a chance at an epic comeback, because the Tigers held the lead the entire third set to close out Dartmouth, 25-18.
Junior Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) continued her double-digit kill streak (10 straight matches) with 10 kills. No other Big Green athlete had double-digit kills, but junior Amber Bryant (Libertyville, Ill.) recorded 16 digs and junior Kendall Houston (Austin, Texas) tallied 23 assists and 10 digs.
Lydia Rudnick led the Tigers with 12 kills. Michaela Venuti recorded a double-double with 36 assists and 11 digs. Hillary Ford was Princeton's dig leader with 18. The squad improved to 10-6 overall and a perfect 5-0 in Ivy League play.
The team stats favored the Tigers. They hit .324 for the match, had 12 total blocks, had three aces and recorded only 19 total errors. The Big Green totaled a .092 hitting percentage, tallied 10 blocks, served two aces and had 28 total errors.
Dartmouth returns to action on Friday, October 22, when it hosts Brown at 7:00 pm. The game will be the Big Green's Dig Pink contest to support Breast Cancer Awareness.
