HANOVER, N.H.- Though neither team found the back of the net there was plenty of drama at Burnham Field tonight as the Dartmouth women's soccer team tied Ivy foe Penn, 0-0 in double overtime.
Dartmouth (3-7-1, 1-2-1 Ivy) held an advantage in both shots, 10-8, and corner kicks, 6-2, over Penn (6-6-1, 2-1-1 Ivy).
There were few scoring opportunities in regulation for either team, with Penn holding a narrow 5-4 shot advantage. The teams combined to put six of those opportunities on goal.
Junior goalkeeper
Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas) made five saves while Caroline Williams made three for Penn. Each team also had a defender make a game-saving stop on the goal line.
Penn's Laura Oliver had a good chance for the Quakers in the 32nd minute right after checking into the game. She fired from the top of the box but Hogan was there to make a solid save. Hogan made her second save of the half in the 40th minute off a shot by Theresa Yankovich.
The Big Green came within an inch of getting the go-ahead goal in the 67th minute when freshman
Chrissy Lozier (Fairfield, Conn.) took a perfect shot that had Williams beat but Penn's Ursula Lopez-Palm made a hero save on the goal line. Lopez-Palm nailed a perfectly-timed header to clear Lozier's shot on the line.
Hogan made for some defensive dramatics of her own minutes later when she made a diving save at the top of the box in a collision with Penn's Marin McDermott. Sophomore back
Aurelia Solomon (Washington, D.C.) also made a game-preserving tackle in the 81st minute when she perfectly and cleanly stole the ball from Lopez-Palm just outside the box.
The first overtime was relatively calm for both teams, with each side getting just one shot off, both wide. The real theatrics were saved for the second overtime, when Dartmouth took five shots and Penn two.
The Big Green appeared to have the game in hand in the 101st minute but somehow just missed on both. Lozier fired from the right side but Williams made a big save that rebounded to the foot of senior
Katie Davis (San Marino, Calif.), but she put the ball just over the crossbar.
Penn responded with back-to-back corner kicks and Adrienne Lerner put one on goal for Hogan to save. Sophomore
Grace Best (Downingtown, Pa.) saved the game defensively for the Green when she blocked a shot by Penn's Kaitlin Campbell on the line in the 106th minute.
Ultimately neither squad could get past the other's defense, resulting in the scoreless stalemate.
The Big Green is back at it this Tuesday when it travels north to Vermont for a 3 p.m. start.
