EGG HARBOR, N.J. — Dartmouth freshman Sarah Knapp (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) won a rain-shortened ECAC Women's Golf Championship on Monday, carding a 1-over 109 for the 27 completed holes. Knapp's three-stroke victory helped the Big Green finish the tournament in fifth place out of the 14 teams competing at Twisted Dune Golf Club.
Sacred Heart won the team title with a 478, two strokes ahead of Fairleigh Dickinson, which led after the first day of competition by a single stroke. Dartmouth completed the 27 holes with a 489, 11 strokes off the pace.
Facing pouring rain and standing water on the course with winds howling at up to 30 mph, Knapp was able to overcome the conditions to earn her first collegiate victory. She finished the first day in second place with a 35-39—74 (+2), two strokes behind Michele Holzwarth of Fairleigh Dickinson, who blistered the back nine at four-under par to storm to the lead.
On Monday with the rain picking up, Knapp forged ahead and matched her front nine total from the first day with a one-under 35. Meanwhile, the rest of the field struggled in the deteriorating weather before tournament officials finally brought the event to a halt after everyone had completed nine holes.
Just about everyone playing finished with higher scores than their averages due to the weather. Sophomore Colleen Carroll (Bettendorf, Iowa) had the next lowest score for the Big Green with a 124 (+16), while senior Katie Gulemi (Fairfield, Conn.) was one stroke behind her with a 125 (+17). Also competing were junior Heather Roland (Newtown Square, Pa.) with a 134 (+26) and sophomore Julie Campbell (Bozeman, Mont.) at 139 (+31).
The women's team will participate in its final fall tournament at Harvard on Oct. 16-17.
