It was a do-or-die game for Yale (5-6-1, 1-2 Ivy), who came into the game winless in Ivy play. The Bulldogs went to reigning Ivy Player of the Year Becky Brown to pull them out of an early 1-0 hole and she responded by playing a role in all three Yale goals in the span of 15 minutes. Despite having a possession advantage in the second half, Dartmouth (3-6-1, 1-2 Ivy) was unable to dig into the lead.
Dartmouth held a 13-6 shot advantage including 7-2 in the second half as the Bulldogs defended their 3-1 halftime lead. Yale's Ayana Sumiyasu was a difference maker for her squad with five big saves while Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas) made two for Dartmouth.
The Big Green struck first in the contest as O'Dea was back in her All-Ivy form with a nice goal in just the 11th minute of the game. Sophomore defender Aurelia Solomon (Washington, D.C.) put a free kick from about 30 yards out right on the mark for O'Dea, who headed one past Sumiyasu for the 1-0 lead.
O'Dea had a huge opportunity to get another goal right after the restart when she broke away from the defense and had Sumiyasu backpedaling. She was just a second late on her strike, however, as the Yale keeper managed to get a tip on the ball to send the shot high.
Yale rallied and got to work offensively soon after, as Brown started the flurry of scoring in the 19th minute. Brown scored an opportunistic goal with a soft touch in the box after a defender misplayed Enma Mullo, who sent the ball across the box where Brown potted one in traffic to tie it.
Brown was in on the next goal as well when she played the ball up to Kristen Forster, who had a one-on-one with Hogan. Hogan met her and played the ball but could not control it in the collision, allowing Forster to keep her feet and strike on an open goal to go up 2-1 in the 26th.
The Bulldogs went up 3-1 eight minutes later in the 34th when Mary Kubiuk scored with a chip shot from the right top of the box to the top corner, again with the assist from Brown.
Dartmouth battled throughout the second half and had some good looks on goal including two solid strikes from senior Katie Davis (San Marino, Calif.), but to no avail. Sumiyasu made three of her five saves in the second including one off a strike by Ally Dutton (Granite bay, Calif.) in the 83rd minute and another off a last minute strike by Allison Yeager (N. Potomac, Md.).
The Big Green has a quick turnaround before hosting New England rival Boston University this Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
