Dartmouth (3-7-1) nearly had Boston's (11-5) shutout streak snapped in the 15th minute when freshman Allison Yeager (N. Potomac, Md.) appeared to have scored in traffic in the box, but she was surprisingly called offsides much to the dismay of the celebrating Dartmouth bench.
The teams were scoreless at the half and ultimately a goal by Jessica Luscinski in the 61st minute would hold up for the win for BU.
"I was really proud of our players from the start," said head coach Angie Hind. "They really came out and busted the gates down and they wanted to prove a point, which is really pleasing. The first half, arguably we had the better of them and we could have been up 1-0 at halftime."
Dartmouth now holds a 6-5-4 lead in the all-time series with Boston University.
Boston held a 15-6 shot advantage but that was not indicative of the game, which was played much closer than that. Each team had just three shots in the first half, though the Terriers held a 12-3 advantage in the second. Dartmouth took two corner kicks and Boston Univ. took one.
Junior goalkeeper Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas) finished with seven saves in a solid outing while Kelly King and Alice Binns (two saves) combined for the shutout for BU.
Junior striker Aly O'Dea (Irvine, Calif.) made great runs throughout the chilly night for Dartmouth, starting with the Green's first real strike in the 13th minute, beating two defenders but putting her shot just wide. Boston's first shot on goal came in the 23rd minute when Lisa Kevorkian, who has 24 points on the season, headed a cross right at Hogan.
Much of the first half was a midfield battle, but the second half would be a different story on both sides.
O'Dea started the second half with a nice run down the right side, playing the ball off her head and crossing it into the box but no one was able to connect at the far post. Boston University countered in the 55th minute when Kevorkian made a run down the right side and shot from a solid angle but Hogan came out to make a bold save on the play.
The Terriers would break through six minutes later with Luscinski's goal from the left side. She beat her defender and fired from the left side. Hogan read the ball and made a diving fingertip save but the ball was struck so hard that it had enough juice to stay on target, ricochet off the post and drop in for the 1-0 lead in the 61st.
Perhaps Dartmouth's best chance of the second half came in the 69th minute when O'Dea sprinted past three defenders and shot while colliding with Boston's keeper, Binns, who made the save by a hair. Rookie Marina Moschitto (Andover, Mass.) forced Binns into her second save just after that, but BU kept the pressure on the other end when Shauna Kelleher put one on goal for Hogan to stop.
Boston fought hard to get an insurance goal, but the Big Green locked down to keep the Terriers from getting out of striking distance. In the 76th minute, Dartmouth senior Peyton Tata (Virginia, Beach, Va.) made a run on the right side, lost her balance after a tackle but kept her feet to get a shot off, putting it high.
The Terriers nearly got the second goal in the 82nd minute but Hogan saved a rocket by Corie Halasz. Erin Fleischli (San Mateo, Calif.) won the battle for the rebound against BU's Krista Minto to clear the ball out.
Dartmouth had two corner kicks in the final two minutes of the game, but was unable to get a shot out of either of them.
"Credit to BU, they are a good team and we knew we'd have to play well," said Hind. "Despite losing I'm happy with how they played and that's important to us leading into the weekend."
Dartmouth has another big game this Saturday when it hosts Ivy contender Penn at 7 p.m. on Burnham Field.
