Complete Game Notes
Home Opener
• After beginning the season with an 87-52 loss at Providence on Saturday night, Dartmouth now plays its home opener against in-state rival New Hampshire.
• The Big Green are 13-10 in home openers since first beginning play in Leede Arena in 1987, including six straight wins from 1992-98.
• The last victory in a home opener came against UC Davis on Nov. 25, 2005 by a 66-61 score.
• Last year the Big Green hosted Loyola (Md.) for the home opener, falling to the Greyounds, 58-41.
• Dartmouth had trouble finding its shooting stroke against the Friars this past Saturday, hitting on just 25.4 percent (16-of-63) from the floor.
• Sophomore R.J. Griffin led the Green with 12 points, half coming at the free throw line where he was a perfect 6-for-6.
• All 14 players on the roster saw some time on the court, including each of the six freshmen. Gediminas Bertasius had 10 points in his collegiate debut.
Series vs. New Hampshire
• This is the 61st game between the in-state rivals, with Dartmouth holding a slight 31-29 advantage.
• Last year UNH defeated the Green by 10, 69-59, in Lundholm Gymnasium in Durham. David Rufful had a career-high 18 points in the loss for Dartmouth, while Alvin Abreu and Tyrone Conley each had 21 for the host Wildcats.
• The last time these two teams met in Leede Arena was two years ago when the Wildcats came away with a 68-59 victory on Jan. 17, 2009.
• The first meeting came on Jan. 12, 1909 when Dartmouth beat New Hampshire State (as it was then known), 22-9.
• The series has been played continually since the 1970-71 season with UNH owning a 26-19 edge over the Green. Five of those games went into overtime.
Scouting the Wildcats
• New Hampshire was picked to finish fourth in the America East in the preseason poll after going 13-17 overall and 6-10 in the conference last year.
• Alvin Abreu led the Wildcats in scoring last year at 14.4 ppg to earn all-conference second-team honors. The senior already has over 1,000 points in his career at UNH and poured in 20 against Lesley in a 79-47 season-opening win on Saturday.
• The Wildcats also got 18 points from Ferg Myrick and 14 more from Chandler Rhoads, both just sophomores.
• The boards are dominated by Dane DiLiegro, who averaged 8.1 rebounds a year ago. The senior has a chance to become the school's all-time leading rebounder.
• New Hampshire is coached by Bill Herrion, now in his sixth year in Durham. The 1981 graduate of Merrimack — the same alma mater as Dartmouth assistant Joey Gallo — enters the game with a 57-89 mark with the Wildcats, and is 295-258 in his 20th season as a Division I head coach with stops at Drexel and East Carolina
Happy To Be Home
After taking the season opener on the chin at Providence, the Big Green should be happy to be back in Leede Arena. While last year's team struggled shooting the ball, it was much better at home — more than 40 percentage points higher in Leede Arena than on the road.
Freshman in the Fire
It didn't take long for all six freshmen to see some action for Dartmouth this season. Each played in the season opener at Providence, ranging from one minute off the bench to 27 minutes in a starting role. Gediminas Bertasius led the rookies with 10 points over 25 minutes in a reserve role, while Tyler Melville chipped in nine as a starter in 27 minutes.
