Complete Game Notes
• Dartmouth is coming off a 10-day break for exams and has the opportunity to focus on playing basketball for the next month, with a little attention going to the holiday.
• Last time on the hardwood, the Big Green took one on the chin in an 80-53 loss at Vermont on Dec. 1. Sophomore R.J. Griffin led the squad with 11 points, while freshman Tyler Melville pitched in a season-high 10 points.
• Dartmouth did win its last contest in Leede Arena over another Patriot League foe, topping Colgate 80-63 on Nov. 27. All Ivy teams hold an impressive 9-2 edge against Patriot teams.
• Junior Jabari Trotter continues to lead the team offensively at 11.3 points per game while connecting on 51.8 percent (29-of-56) from the floor and a stellar 57.7 percent (15-of-26) from downtown.
• The Big Green's hustle man is junior David Rufful, as he leads the team in rebounding (5.9) and steals (1.4), plus chips in 9.3 points a game.
• One major improvement for the team this year has come at the free throw line. Dartmouth has converted 84-of-114 (.737) of its foul shots in 2010-11, compared to 263-of-401 (.656) last year.
Series vs. Army
• Army has won the past four meetings to take the lead in the all-time series, 17-16.
• This is the third straight game between the two to take place in Leede Arena. The Black Knights defeated Dartmouth in January of 2009, 61-54, then beat the Big Green last December, 59-46, despite not hitting a single three-pointer.
• Jabari Trotter has had the most success among active players on either side in the series, averaging 12.0 points with seven total threes in the three games during his tenure.
• It has been nearly 83 years since the first game between the two institutions, a 26-18 Big Green victory at West Point on Dec. 22, 1926.
Scouting the Black Knights
• Army, in the midst of a seven-game road trip, just ended a three-game skid when it defeated New Hampshire in Durham on Thursday, 71-63.
• Forward Ella Ellis registered his first career double-double in the game with 21 points and 10 rebounds while hitting on 7-of-14 from the floor.
• Army has already played two Ivy League teams away from home, losing at Yale by an 87-79 margin and versus Penn in New Jersey last Saturday, 68-52.
• Ellis is one of three Black Knights averaging double figures on the young season at 13.7 points. Guard Julian Simmons leads the way at 17.4, while forward Jeremy Hence boasts a 15.9-point average while leading the team with 6.2 boards.
• Simmons is the most prolific shooter on the team, throwing up 14 shots a game, but makes just 38.1 percent (yet 39.7 percent from long range). Hence has been extremely accurate from the floor at 56.3 percent and 51.4 percent (19-of-37) on three-pointers, yet oddly off at the charity stripe (16-of-36, 44.4 percent).
• Army as a team has connected on 42.2 percent of its three-point attempts while making more than nine triples a game, both of which rank among the top 20 nationally.
Breaking a Pattern
So far this year, Dartmouth has been in a pattern of losing two games, then winning one, doing so over the first six games. The cycle started over at Vermont with the 80-53 loss, meaning if the pattern holds, the Big Green will lose this game but win at St. Francis (N.Y.) on Tuesday night. I think it's safe to say head coach Paul Cormier would like the trend to end against Army.
Twin State Showdown
Unfortunately for Dartmouth, its battle with twin-state rival Vermont did not go very well in an 80-53 loss in Burlington on Dec. 1. The Big Green have lost 11 of the last 12 meetings with the Catamounts, with the lone victory coming three years ago in Leede Arena on a last-second shot, 76-75.
Young Guards Making it Happen
The silver lining in the loss at Vermont came in the form of a pair of guards — freshman Tyler Melville and sophomore R.J. Griffin. Melville enjoyed his finest game to date with a season-high 10 points, hitting 3-of-6 field goals with a three-pointer, plus knocked down all three of his free throws and had three assists. Griffin added a trio of treys, giving him 11 in the previous five games.
Pick Six to Score
No less than six Big Green players scored in double figures in the 80-63 win over Colgate on Nov. 27, the first time even five players had tallied 10 or more in over three years (98-82 win over VMI on Nov. 10, 2007).
Weeden Not Wobbling
Dartmouth made a concerted effort to get senior Clive Weeden involved in the game early against Colgate, and it paid off. The co-captain responded with his third career double-double with 14 points (tying a career high) and 12 rebounds. The previous double-double recorded by the Big Green came courtesy of Matt LaBove on Dec. 17 last season at Lehigh.
