Complete Game Notes
• With a three-point victory over Army on Saturday, Dartmouth is aiming to win consecutive games for the first time since historical road wins at Penn and Princeton on Feb. 20-21, 2009.
• The win against Army had another thing in common with the Princeton triumph two years ago: it was the last time the Big Green rallied from a double-digit deficit to win a game. Dartmouth trailed by 12 at one point in the second half against the Black Knights.
• Senior Ronnie Dixon, Dartmouth's leading scorer last year, broke out with a career-high 21 points — 18 in the second half — thanks to hitting 6-of-7 three-pointers, not to mention equaling a personal best with six assists as well.
• The shots were falling in the second half for the Green, particularly from long range. Dartmouth nailed 8-of-11 (.727) from downtown and finished the game with its best percentage (.556, 10-of-18) in four years.
• In eight games this year, the Big Green already have nearly half as many three-pointers (50) as they did all last season (102) over 28 games.
• Junior David Rufful continued to be the chairman of the boards for the Big Green, claiming seven rebounds to go along with 14 points. It was the sixth time in eight games the 6-4 wing led the team on the glass.
• Dartmouth is 41st nationally in free throw percentage (.744) after ranking 269th last year.
Series vs. St. Francis
• Dartmouth has won all three previous meetings against the Terriers, but each one was played in Hanover, including last year's 65-64 win on David Rufful's three-point play with 0.9 seconds to go.
• The first game, a 68-62 win, was played on Jan. 7, 1981 prior to the construction of Leede Arena.
• Dartmouth is 12-17 against current NEC schools, having already lost to Quinnipiac just before Thanksgiving.
Scouting the Terriers
• St. Francis enters this game with a four-game winning streak on the line, having beaten the other St. Francis (Pa.), Robert Morris, Colgate and most recently Canisius on Friday, 76-58.
• Forward Akeem Johnson came off the bench to score a career-high 21 points for the Terriers in the win at Canisius, hitting 8-of-11 field goals, while guard Ricky Cadell added 20 more with five three-pointers.
• The St. Francis defense held the Griffins to just six field goals in the second half and forced a total of 19 turnovers leading to 27 points.
• St. Francis puts more effort into pressure defense than rebounding, forcing an average of 18 turnovers but getting beat on the glass by nearly 4.5 per game.
• Cadell and another Akeem — Bennett — are the two long-range threats, both shooting better than 41 percent on three-pointers and averaging around 17 points each.
• Bennett also leads the team in rebounding at 6.0 per game and steals with nearly three per contest.
• The Terriers have a new head coach this year in Brooklyn native Glenn Braica, who spent the previous six years as an assistant at St. John's after 15 years as an assistant at St. Francis.
Rallying for a Win
Dartmouth found itself in a 12-point hole early in the second half against visiting Army on Dec. 11, yet managed to rally for a 71-68 victory. The last Big Green win when trailing by at least 10 points came on Feb. 21, 2009, when they came back from a 13-point deficit at Princeton. The victory evened the series with the Black Knights at 17 apiece.
Three-Point Theater
Playing against one of the top three-point-shooting teams in the country, Dartmouth beat Army at its own game in the second half by raining down eight triples in just 11 attempts. The Black Knights entered the game shooting 42.2 percent on threes and ranked among the top 15 nationally. But the Big Green finished the game 10-of-18 behind the arc, its best percentage (.556) in a game with at least four treys in nearly four years when they had an identical performance against Stony Brook.
Dixon Lights It Up for 21
The player who had the mythical hot-hand (yes, I said it, mythical) against Army was senior Ronnie Dixon, who torched the nets for a career-high 21 points with six three-pointers, the most by a Big Green player since Alex Barnett also hit 6-of-7 against Vermont on Dec. 2, 2008. Five of Dixon's triples came in the second half as he scored 18 of Dartmouth's 43 points. He also surpassed 500 career points as the active leader on the team.
More Than a Flesh Wound
With the score tied at 66 and less than a minute left on the clock, Dartmouth caught a break when a Black Knight accidentally touched the ball while sophomore R.J. Griffin was trying to get the ball inbounds. That is against the rules and cause for a technical foul. Ronnie Dixon was called upon to sink the foul shots, which he did, giving Dartmouth the lead for good.
Rufful the Rebounder
Junior David Rufful, also known as “Curtains,” is Dartmouth's hustle leader. The 6-4 player averages 6.0 rebounds a game and has led the team in rebounding in six of the first eight games (including a career-high 11 at Hartford), plus tops the team with 10 steals.
