HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team erased a two-goal Cornell lead as the Big Green tallied four goals in the third period to defeat the #10 Cornell Hockey team, 5-4 on Saturday in Thompson Arena.
Seniors Joe Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) and Peter Boldt (Greenwich, Conn.) connected for the tying goal at 4:54 of the third while junior Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.) tallied the game winner at 2:13.
Just 1:40 in the opening frame Dartmouth scored the first goal of the game off a huge slapshot from the blueline by defenseman Joe Stejskal (Grand Rapids, Minn.). Matt Reber (Edina, Minn.) brought the puck down moving goalie Ben Scrivens to one side of the cage. Estoclet was there to corral the puck and pass quickly up to Stejskal who wound up for his second goal of the season.
Cornell tied things up at 12:22 after a scrum in front of the Dartmouth net allowed the Big Red to get four shots on net with Riley Nash finally able to sneak the puck across the line and past netminder James Mello (Rehoboth, Mass.).
A wraparound goal by Locke Jillson at 10:55 gave Cornell the lead as a turnover on the blue line allowed Jillson to steal the puck and go around behind the cage. Less than a minute later the Big Red got another one as the visiting team appeared to be scoring at will.
The Big Green defense came together after the third goal and shut down Cornell while the Dartmouth offense was able to put some pressure on Scrivens. The Big Red carried a 3-1 lead on the scoreboard as well as a 19-13 advantage in shots into the first break.
Dartmouth and its defense was much better to start the second, even killing of Cornell's first power play opportunity of the game. The Big Green offense continued to get some timely shots. Andrew Owsiak (Moose Jaw, Sask.) saw one of his shots skim the top of the cross bar and come out the other side while Reber had a point-blank shot that was saved by Scrivens.
Alex Goodship (Blackfalds, Alta.) put a hard shot on Scrivens' pads as Dartmouth continued to challenge the Big Red goalie and attempt to cut into the Cornell two-goal lead.
The Big Green killed off another penalty in the final 5:00 minutes as the home team was able to garner a few more shots on net in that stanza as compared to the first.
A tick-tack power play goal helped Dartmouth cut into Cornell's first-period lead in the final period. With just 40 seconds left in the extra-man chance, Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) brought the puck down passing to Reber behind the net. Reber took a shot that was rebounded out to a waiting Jones who fired in on Scrivens stick side for the goal.
But Cornell got it back at 11:47 with another goal of its own as Dartmouth seemed to let down briefly.
The Big Green powered past Scrivens with 6:55 left on the clock as Dartmouth was gaining some momentum. A pileup in front of the Cornell net had Nick Walsh (Shannonville, Ont.) putting the puck through Scrivens legs. Jones and Troy Mattila (Rockford, Ill.) assisted on the play.
The Big Green's heroics came with under 3:00 to play in the contest. Gaudet and Boldt teamed up for a power play goal that tied the contest at four. Then Estoclet sent the crowd into a frenzy with the go-ahead goal at 2:13 as Stejskal and Fleming assisted on the play.
Mello finished with 35 saves for Dartmouth, earning his second win of the season. Scrivens had 27 in goal for the Big Red. Dartmouth improves to 8-17-2 on the season, 7-12-2 in the ECAC. Cornell falls to 16-9-3, 13-6-2 in the league.
Dartmouth will be in action next weekend, traveling to St. Lawrence and Clarkson for its last two regular-season games of the season.
