HANCOCK, Mass. – The Dartmouth ski team remains undefeated in the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) race circuit this season, claiming its fifth victory on Saturday at the Williams College winter carnival. The Big Green, bested after the first day by the University of Vermont's 59 point lead, came from behind on day two to overthrow its Vermont rival, taking a narrow lead with 892 points. Vermont took second with 890 points, and the University of New Hampshire took third with 705 points.
Women's cross cross country led the Big Green to victory in the 5-kilometer freestyle event at the Prospect Mountain Nordic Ski Center with all five athletes in the top-10. Dartmouth junior
Ida Sargent took her 6th EISA win of the season, followed by Vermont's Caitlin Patterson in second and Dartmouth sophomore
Sophie Caldwell in third. Sophomore
Erika Flowers took fourth, senior Katie Bono was eighth, and sophomore
Stephanie Crocker placed ninth.
Dartmouth sophomore
Eric Packer won the men's 10-kilometer freestyle competition for his first ever EISA victory. Wyatt Fereday of Colby College finished second, and Dartmouth senior
Patrick O'Brien rounded out the podium in third place. Freshman
Sam Tarling skied strongly into seventh place, scoring for the Big Green.
Megan Ryley of Vermont won the women's slalom competition at Jiminy Peak, but was not joined on the podium by any other Vermont alpine skiers--uncharacteristic for the team that has consistently dominated the alpine side of the EISA circuit. Ryley was joined on the podium by Dartmouth freshman
Annie Rendall in second and Middlebury's Nicole Dvorak for third. Sophomores
Courtney Hammond and
Kelsey Roddick tied for tenth place.
On the men's side, Colby College's Joshua Kernan topped the field for the win, followed by New Hampshire's Paul Atkinson and Vincent Lebrun-Fortin, also of Colby College. Dartmouth junior Ace Tarberry, consistently a first finisher for the Big Green, placed seventh, just ahead of sophomore
Peter Ankeny in eighth place.
The 2010 EISA season will commence Feb. 26-27 with the Middlebury College winter Carnival / EISA Championships, allowing skiers a final chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships that will be held March 10-13 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
